The new Huawei Y7p expectedly comes with an IPS LCD screen, 6.39 inches in size, with a screen to body ratio of about 82.4%. It has a punch hole design with the camera tucked in the top left corner. This design has become very popular with new upcoming phones as it is considered non-intrusive when it comes to watching content, as opposed to a teardrop notch or center punch out.
It has narrow bezels but the chin at the bottom is a little outspoken. It is a plastic build, both frame and back, with a triple camera layout and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. We have a 3.5mm head jack but unfortunately a micro-USB connector.
The Huawei Y7p comes with the Hisilicon Kirin 710F, a very popular in-house processor that has also been used in the P40 Lite E and the updated P30 Lite. It is well optimized and great in power management. It runs a 2.2 GHz Cortex A73/A53 CPU combo alongside a Mali G51 MP4. The SoC has clearly improved on graphics and multitasking, making one forget that it’s an entry-level device.
It won’t win any awards but it will certainly get the work done. Onboard is a generous 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of mass storage, besides a hybrid micro SDXC expandable memory card that shares a slot with the sim card. That should most certainly suffice for most as the memory can be extended by an extra 256 GB – see Huawei Y6p.
Despite being an entry, the Huawei Y7p really shines with the cameras. It has a 48 mp primary, certainly a big sensor in the entry-level segment. That in addition to 8 mp ultra wide and a 2 mp depth sensor. For a budget, the photos certainly punch above its peers, with decent and well-detailed images, especially in well-lighted environments.
It takes some of the best entry-level low light images too, on top of usable bokeh and portrait pictures due to its depth sensor. The wide-angle lens is certainly a welcome addition, especially for those landscape photos. It can shoot video in 1080p at 30fps. Upfront is a decent 8mp shooter capable of 1080 video at 30fps – see Huawei Y5p.
The Huawei Y7p comes with the industry-standard 4000 mah battery, certainly a massive battery for such entry-level specifications. It can even last 2 days on average use so breezing through the day is piecemeal to this device. That means lots of hours on the internet, consuming content and photography without worrying about it falling on you. However, since it comes with a micro-USB connector, we don’t get fast charging but standard charging of 10W. it is a compromise, but not one that we take too hard. A little over 2 hours charging time and you are good to go – see Huawei Y8p.
As many of the devices in the Huawei stable, the software has become a very worrying development over the last few months, and the Huawei Y7p is no different. After being kicked out of Android core GMS, Huawei has been trying to fill in the gap for its users outside china, through HMS and optimizing their software. It comes with EMUI 9.1 based off Android 9 Pie straight off the box, but the Android 10 update should be on the way.
Installing Google apps on Huawei Y7p
Instead of Playstore, you get AppGallery, but without GMS, some Android stock apps like YouTube, Gmail, Docs, and those that need the GMS to operate like the location for Uber, are not compatible. Nonetheless, one can also sideload apps from APK resources all over the internet. The EMUI still works like a charm though, light, fluid, and reliable so it’s easy to forget the woes that bedevil it.
The Huawei Y7p is a great device, in terms of hardware at least. The screen design is very new, the camera huge at this price point, and a big battery. It is easy to recommend, once you get past the android related misgivings. It easily one of the more powerful budget phones and that should mean something to most, especially those who have already used Huawei devices.
