Huawei Nova Y90

The Huawei Nova Y90 is a refresh to the Nova series from Huawei midrange devices, which ran into a little trouble when it went it got kicked out of Android. 90Hz LCD screen, a primary 50MP camera, 40W fast charging, a huge battery at 5000mAh and the new midrange Snapdragon 680 4G chipset. Design

The Huawei Nova Y90 comes with a 6.7-inch 90Hz LCD screen with a center aligned punch hole design for the selfie camera. It’s a beauty, with very even bezels and a very narrow chin, with a screen to body ratio of 89.1%. It an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10 which makes it an absolute delight to consume media with. It has a plastic frame, a plastic back and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 front panel. It is very bright and vivid, peaking at 500 nits. It’s not rated for dust and splash protection, but it has water repellent coating for splash protection. Fortunately, it keeps the headphone jack. It has a fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed within the side home button. It doesn’t support stereo speakers, but still offers great sound when playing media.

Performance

The Huawei Nova Y90 brings in the heat with latest generation midrange Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 4G chipset, the fatest in the current range of midrange 4G chips, making it very fast and excellent for gaming. It has a Kyro Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 610 GPU, with storage options of 4/6/8 GB for RAM & 128 GB for ROM. It however does not have expandable memory option. Paired with the 90Hz LCD screen, running the latest EMUI 12, the performance feels very fast and premium. Huawei’s UI is rich in customizations, supporting numerous always-on screen animations. No lags or slow transitions on this one. Everything feels fast, fluid and rich in colour.

Cameras

The Huawei Nova Y90 has a triple camera arrangement on the back. It comes with an excellent 50 MP primary sensor, with 12.5 MP picture binning for those excellent daylight photos. It has an 2MP macro lens for close up photos. There is a 2MP depth lens, giving it great immersion when it comes to those close up photos. The video can support up to1080p video at a 30 fps, with HDR supports & gyro-EIS stability assistance. It can also record . The selfie camera is a decent 8MP wide sensor, capable of 1080p video at 30fps. The selfies and videos are great and well exposed.

Other features

The Huawei Nova Y90 has a decent 40W fast charging, which can charge the phone to 100% in a little over an hour. That in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 5000mAh non-removable battery. Even with the 90Hz high refresh rate LCD screen, this should be more than a day’s worth. The main concession would be that there is no wireless charging here though it fortunately does support NFC for contactless paying.

Similarly, priced phones would include the Samsung Galaxy A53, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. the main talking points would be screen and fast charging, but considering the phone does not come with native Google Mobile Service, its important to consider that some apps might be missing, like Maps, YouTube and Gmail. They can however be side loaded in a rather straightforward manner so no need for alarm.

For the price, it’s a great device. Superior design, high end screen and very fast charging. Some people might feel a little skeptical about Harmony OS or EMUI, but it’s reassuring that it’s not any different form other Android skins so the experience may not vary much.
