Huawei Nova 9
The Huawei Nova 9 is a refresh to the Nova series from Huawei midrange devices, which ran into a little trouble when it went it got kicked out of Android. 120Hz super AMOLED screen, a primary 64MP camera, 25W fast charging, a huge battery at 5000mAh and the new flagship Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset. Add 5G and it’s quite a competitively priced midrange. It ticks pretty much every box, and then some. This phone is certainly a midrange powerhouse.
The Huawei Nova 9 comes with a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED screen with a center-aligned punch-hole design for the selfie camera. It’s a beauty, with very even bezels and a very narrow chin, with a screen-to-body ratio of 86.4%. It has an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10+ which makes it an absolute delight to consume media with.
It has a plastic frame, a plastic back and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front panel. It is very bright and vivid, peaking at 1000 nits. It’s not rated for dust and splash protection, but it has a water-repellent coating for splash protection. unfortunately, it loses the headphone jack. It has a fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed within the side home button. It doesn’t support stereo speakers but still offers great sound when playing media.
The Huawei Nova 9 brings in the heat with the latest generation midrange Qualcomm SM7325 Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset, the fastest in the current range of midrange 5G chips, making it very fast and excellent for gaming. It has a Kyro Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 642L GPU, with storage options of 8 or 12 GB for RAM & 256 GB for ROM.
It however comes with a hybrid expandable memory option, which shares the slot with the sim card. Paired with the 120Hz AMOLED screen, running the latest Android 11 with One UI 3.1 skin on top, the performance feels very fast and premium. Samsung’s UI is rich in customizations, supporting numerous always-on screen animations. No lags or slow transitions on this one. Everything feels fast, fluid, and rich in color.
The Huawei Nova 9 has a triple camera arrangement on the back. It comes with an excellent 64 MP primary sensor, with 8 MP picture binning for those excellent daylight photos. It has a 12MP ultra-wide with a 123˚ FOV, for great landscape and group photos. There is a 5MP depth lens, giving it great immersion when it comes to those close-up photos.
The video can support up to 4K video at 30 fps, with HDR supports & gyro-EIS stability assistance. It can also record 1080p video at 60 fps. The selfie camera is a generous 32MP wide sensor, capable of 4K at 30fps and 1080p video at 30fps. The selfies and videos are great and well exposed.
The Huawei Nova 9 has a decent 25W fast charging, which can charge the phone to 100% in a little over an hour. That is in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 5000mAh non-removable battery. Even with the 120Hz high refresh rate AMOLED screen, this should be more than a day’s worth. The main concession would be that there is no wireless charging here though it does come with wired reverse charging. It, fortunately, does support NFC for contactless paying.
Similarly, priced phones would include the Samsung Galaxy A53, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. the main talking points would be screen and fast charging, but considering the phone does not come with native Google Mobile Service, its important to consider that some apps might be missing, like Maps, YouTube and Gmail. They can however be side-loaded in a rather straightforward manner so no need for alarm.
For the price, it’s a great device. Superior design, high-end screen, and very fast charging. Some people might feel a little skeptical about Harmony OS, but it’s reassuring that it’s not any different from other Android skins so the experience may not vary much.
It comes in Icy Blue, Blazing Black, & White
