Tecno Spark 10 5G Review
When it comes to exceptional value for money, TECNO stands out as a brand of choice. Their smartphones boast impressive features without the exorbitant price tags associated with mainstream brands. This explains why TECNO has firmly established itself as a dominant force in the African smartphone market.
Display and Design
Today, we delve into the design of the Tecno Spark 10 5G, a smartphone priced at approximately Ksh. 27,000. It offers swift mobile connectivity and features a lightweight plastic casing. Notable is its distinct angular design with rounded corners and three-dimensional surfaces on the back, which display varying shades under different lighting conditions. The placement of the camera module is cleverly executed, contributing to an overall neat construction. While the device may not be exceptionally pressure-resistant, it is well-crafted and aligns with the dimensions and weight of other devices in its price category. In addition to the USB Type-C port, which operates at USB 2.0 standard data transfer speeds, there is a 3.5 mm audio port. Our test unit boasts 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, but international variants offer storage options of 128 GB and 256 GB.
Tecno Mobile provides the RAM size inclusive of virtual working memory for its models, allowing for expanded functionality via a swap file in the device’s storage. While this feature aids in running memory-intensive applications, it’s important to note that the storage’s performance is significantly slower, and it cannot fully replace dedicated RAM. Regrettably, the Tecno Spark 10 does not include NFC, limiting its compatibility with mobile payment services. The device does, however, accommodate a microSD card in the SIM tray at the front, while dual SIM cards can be inserted at the back. Testing with a microSD Angelbird V60 yielded respectable transfer speeds, ensuring efficient data transfers.
Software
The 5G modem operates across a range of frequencies, facilitating reliable mobile internet access, even when traveling abroad. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Tecno smartphone is not a universal device suitable for use worldwide. The Wi-Fi module supports Wi-Fi 5, which is the fastest standard the phone can handle, although it slightly lags behind other phones in its price bracket in terms of Wi-Fi speed. Running Android 13 as its base operating system, the Tecno Spark 10 also features the manufacturer’s proprietary software interface, HiOS. HiOS customizes various aspects of the operating system and introduces additional features such as a voice distorter for messaging apps, a privacy-focused blackout mode, and a multi-window mode. As of now, updates are delivered at three-month intervals. The touchscreen is impressively sensitive, enabling precise input, even in the corners. The 90 Hz technology enhances its responsiveness. The fingerprint sensor, conveniently integrated into the standby button on the right, accurately recognizes registered fingerprints and unlocks the phone swiftly. Face recognition is also an option, although it relies on two-dimensional image recognition and may be susceptible to manipulation.
Camera
The rear camera employs a 50 MP sensor from Hynix as its primary shooter. While a secondary lens is present, it serves a low-resolution role, primarily for creating blur effects without capturing standalone images. In our photo testing, the primary camera delivers commendable results for close-up shots, showcasing good dynamic range in darker settings. However, there are noticeable sharpness issues in wider shots, with limited detail capture and overexposed bright areas. Low-light and high-contrast scenarios reveal impressive dynamic range, preserving details in both bright and dark regions, although overall image sharpness remains somewhat mediocre.
Video recording is possible at a maximum resolution of 2K, offering more pixels than a standard Full HD camera. However, 60 fps recording is limited to 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. The device responds promptly to adjustments in brightness, and the autofocus functions effectively. The front-facing camera boasts an 8 MP resolution and features an LED flash discreetly integrated into the device’s bezel. In well-lit conditions, this camera captures decent selfies with modest zooming capabilities. However, it struggles to capture details in low-light environments.
Performance
The Tecno Spark 10 5G relies on the MediaTek Dimensity 6020, a relatively new SoC that closely resembles the Dimensity 700. Our review unit impressively attains competitive performance scores within its price range, often surpassing comparable devices in benchmarks. While occasional minor delays may occur in everyday usage, the system operates relatively smoothly and handles moderately complex applications without major issues. It’s essential to remember that high-end functionality shouldn’t be expected at this price point, but the phone is adequately equipped for routine tasks. The inclusion of fast UFS 2.2 storage, which isn’t yet standard in all devices, contributes to a smoother user experience.
The mono speaker on the device leans towards treble-heavy audio, providing clear vocal output but becoming shrill in higher frequency ranges. Enjoying music is more satisfying when using headphones or external speakers, with connectivity options via the 3.5 mm audio port or Bluetooth. The device features a 5,000 mAh battery that supports a maximum charging speed of 18 W, taking up to 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach a full 100% charge. Subsequently, you can enjoy up to 16 hours of continuous Wi-Fi usage, easily lasting throughout the day, while moderate use could stretch the battery life to two days.
Conclusion
The Tecno Spark 10 5G presents itself as an affordable mid-range smartphone with 5G capability and an attractive casing design. Overall, it offers a versatile package: abundant software features, commendable performance for its price bracket, and long-lasting battery life. Additionally, it’s available in configurations with ample storage capacity. The camera stands out for its dynamic range in high-contrast scenes.
However, it falls behind the competition in several aspects. The screen is comparatively dimmer with a lower resolution, lacks NFC for mobile payments, and doesn’t include a rear wide-angle camera. Nevertheless, these limitations could potentially translate into cost savings, making the Tecno Spark 10 5G an appealing 5G option with sign. See more Tecno phones in Kenya.
