The Huawei Y8s price in Kenya is Ksh 19,500. The Huawei Y8s Android smartphone goes for 19,800 shillings in Kenya. It has been available since 2020, May 21 as a budget device with great hardware and specs. Y8s by Huawei supports Google services as well as the Android operating system.
Design and display
The new Huawei Y8s comes with an IPS LCD screen, 6.5 inches in size, with a screen-to-body ratio of about 82.8%. It has quite a big notch that houses a dual selfie camera setup. This is quite a unique design, seeing that not many phones come with a dual selfie camera. It has narrow bezels and a small chin at the bottom. It is a plastic build, both frame, and back, with a back dual camera layout and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. We have a 3.5 mm head jack but unfortunately a micro-USB connector.
Performance
The Y8s comes with the Hi-silicon Kirin 710F, a very popular in-house processor that has also been used in the P40 Lite E, Huawei Y7p, and the updated P30 Lite. It is well optimized and great in power management. It runs a 2.2 GHz Cortex A73/A53 CPU combo alongside a Mali G51 MP4. The SoC has improved on graphics and multitasking, making one forget that it’s an entry-level device. It won’t win any awards but it will certainly get the work done.
Onboard is a generous 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of mass storage, besides a hybrid micro SDXC expandable memory card that shares a slot with the sim card. That should most certainly suffice for most as the memory can be extended by an extra 256GB – You may also like Huawei Y9 Prime 2019.
Camera
Despite being a budget, the Huawei Y8s shoots with a 48 mp primary, certainly a big sensor in the entry-level segment. That’s in addition to a 2 mp depth sensor. For a budget, the photos certainly punch above their peers, with decent and well-detailed images, especially in well-lighted environments. It takes some decent entry-level low light images too, though the bokeh and portrait pictures don’t benefit much from the depth sensor. It can shoot video in 1080p at 30fps. Upfront is a decent 8 mp shooter capable of 1080 video at 30fps.
Battery
The Huawei Y8s comes with an industry-standard 4000 mAh battery, certainly a massive battery for such entry-level specifications. It can even last 2 days on average use so breezing through the day is piecemeal to this device. That means lots of hours on the internet, consuming content and photography without worry of it falling on you. However, since it comes with a micro-USB connector, we don’t get fast charging but standard charging of 10W. It is a compromise, but not one that we take too hard. A little over 2 hours charging time and you are good to go.
Huawei Y8s software
Unlike many of the newer devices in the Huawei stable, the Huawei Y8s come with Google’s core GSM which is a pleasant surprise. It comes with EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie straight off the box, but the Android 10 update should be on the way. That means we still enjoy the small joys of android, like maps, YouTube, Gmail, and above all, the Play-store.
There is therefore no need to side-load apps or lean towards custom ROMs, which is a great sigh of relief. That also means we can expect updates and security patches whenever they are available – see Huawei Y7 Prime 2019.
Conclusion
The Huawei Y8s is a great device, in terms of hardware at least. The screen design is good enough, the chipset solid, and a big enough battery. It is easy to recommend, especially now that it has GMS support. It easily one of the more powerful budget phones and that should mean something to most, especially those who have already used Huawei devices.
