Phone overview

Huawei has for long produced various variants to fit every segment of the market, from entry-level all the way to the flagships. That leaves a lot of room in the middle where they can mess around with components, mix and match and still end up with a great device. That’s what Huawei Y9 Prime, available from August 2019, feels like, a good value proposition with some nice design choices that give a completely modern feel. Here are the details.

Design

The Huawei Y9 Prime comes with the absolutely beautiful notchless IPS LCD 6.59-inch screen with that magical 84.3% screen to body ratio. That is because the front-facing camera uses a mechanical pop-up system where the camera retracts into the top frame of the phone, hiding from view. It is most certainly aesthetically pleasing to consume content on this phone as you are hardly distracted by various camera designs, but rather a whole screen interrupted view.

The rest of the phone is a plastic build, frame, and back, where a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner awaits, in addition to a triple camera array. At the bottom, we are lucky to have both a USB-C connector and a 3.5mm jack. You may want to see Huawei Y8s.

Performance

The Huawei Y9 Prime is certainly no slouch.it comes with the midrange in-house HiSilicon Kirin 710F chip, a processor that has been featured in many midrange phones from Huawei. Alongside this, we have an octa-core 2.2 GHz Cortex A73/A53 CPU combo and a Mali G51 MP4 GPU. This is some solid performance whichever way you look at it, from basic phone use to intensive graphic tasks, though we really wouldn’t be expecting flagship scores. The onboard memory configurations are 4GB for RAM and a 64/128GB option for internal mass storage, in addition to a dedicated expandable memory card.

Camera

Huawei has for long been associated with great camera experiences, from their entry devices to their flagships, and we can see similar focus has been placed on the Huawei Y9 Prime with a new AI camera and an array of new interactive modes. The primary sensor is a 16mp ide sensor, an 8mp ultrawide, and a 2mp depth sensor. See also Huawei Y7 Prime 2019.

Of course, it functions great in optimal lighting but the images are a little blown out when a little overexposed. Low light photos are not all that great either but are usable still. It can shoot 1080p video at 30fps. On the front, we have the motorized pop up 16mp camera, that has a redundancy function that lets it close if it senses it is falling. It can also record HD video in 30fps.

Battery

The Huawei Y9 Prime smartphone has great battery life. The 4000 mAh non-removable battery has become the industry standard, easily lasting more than a day without needing to charge. That means more hours of power use, be it content consumption, browsing, or photography, you name it, it can handle it. What’s not so pleasing is the fact we don’t get fast charging so have to contend with the slow standard charging that takes forever to fill up. Needless to say, we also don’t get wireless charging.

Software

The Huawei Y9 Prime comes with the Android 9 Pie-based Magic UI 2.1, upgradable to Android 10. This new UI is optimized for less powerful devices making it fast and very light. The bloatware is not overwhelming but it’s nothing close to stock. What’s important to note is that with Huawei being kicked out of Android following the US ban, support and updates remain unclear to it’s important to keep that in mind. Other than that, it’s quite a pleasurable experience.

Overall, the Huawei Y9 Prime is certainly a beautiful device, with an uninterrupted screen, a great battery, and a decent camera. At its price point, it’s an easy favorite for value and performance. With the motorized camera, it adds the wow factor that could be the deciding factor for that hip new device.
