Huawei P50e
The Huawei P50e is a refresh to the P series from Huawei flagship devices, which ran into a little trouble when it went it got kicked out of Android. 120Hz super AMOLED screen, a primary 64MP quad camera set up, 66W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, a huge battery at 4360mAh, and the new flagship Snapdragon 888 4G chipset. Other than lacking 5G, it’s as good a flagship as any other. It ticks pretty much every box, and then some. This phone is certainly a flagship powerhouse.
Design
The Huawei P50e comes with a 6.5-inch 90Hz OLED screen with a center-aligned punch hole design for the selfie camera. It’s a beauty, with very even bezels and a very narrow chin, with a screen-to-body ratio of 88.8%. It has an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10+ which makes it an absolute delight to consume media with. It has an aluminum frame, a glass back and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front panel. It is very bright and vivid, peaking at 1000 nits. It’s rated IP68 for dust and splash protection and is water resistant in up to 1.5m of water for 30 mins. unfortunately, it loses the headphone jack. It has a fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed under the screen. It does support stereo speakers, offering great sound when playing media.
Performance
The Huawei P50e brings in the heat with the latest generation midrange Snapdragon 778 4G chipset, the fastest in the current range of midrange chips, making it very fast and excellent for gaming. It has a Kyro Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 642L GPU, with storage options of 8 or 12 GB for RAM & 256/512 GB for ROM. It however comes with a hybrid expandable memory option, which shares the slot with the sim card. Paired with the 120Hz AMOLED screen, running the latest Harmony OS 2.0 skin on top. Despite losing the core services, the performance still feels very fast and premium. Huawei has really tried to bridge the gap after being kicked out of Android but they have made tremendous progress bridging the gap & offering a working alternative. Everything feels fast, fluid, and rich in color.
Cameras
The Huawei P50e has a quad camera arrangement on the back. It comes with an excellent 50 MP primary sensor, with 12.5MP picture binning for those excellent daylight photos. It has a 13MP ultra-wide with a 123˚ FOV, for great landscape and group photos. There is a 12MP depth periscope lens, giving it great immersion when it comes to those close-up photos, with 5X optical zoom with OIS. The video can support up to 4K video at 30 fps, with HDR supports & gyro-EIS stability assistance. It can also record 1080p video at 60 fps. The selfie camera is a generous 13MP ultrawide sensor, capable of 4K at 30fps and 1080p video at 60fps. The selfies and videos are great and well exposed.
Other features
The Huawei P50e has an excellent 66W fast charging, which can charge the phone to 100% in 35 mins. That is in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 4100mAh non-removable battery. Even with the 90Hz high refresh rate OLED screen, this should be more than a day’s worth. The main concession would be that there is no wireless charging here though it does come with wired reverse charging. It, fortunately, does support NFC for contactless paying.
Similarly, priced phones would include the Oppo Reno6 5G, OnePlus 8T, Samsung Galaxy A72, and the Realme GT 5G. the main talking points would be screen and fast charging, but considering the phone does not come with native Google Mobile Service, it’s important to consider that some apps might be missing, like Maps, YouTube and Gmail. They can however be sideloaded in a rather straightforward manner so no need for alarm.
For the price, it’s a great device. Superior design, high-end screen, and very fast charging. Some people might feel a little skeptical about Harmony OS, but it’s reassuring that it’s not any different from other Android skins so the experience may not vary much.
