Steam Deck OLED Overview

The Steam Deck OLED is the real deal. While it doesn’t completely overhaul the original Steam Deck, adding features like an OLED HDR-capable display, Wi-Fi 6, and enhanced cooling makes a significant difference. Like its predecessor, this handheld device is a remarkable engineering piece.

Fans of the Steam Deck find it more enjoyable than other powerful Windows 11 handhelds, such as the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.  The Steam Deck OLED improves on the original device. Upgrading isn’t necessary if you already have a Steam Deck and only use it occasionally. However, if you’re new to the Steam Deck or use the original as your main gaming system, getting this version is easy.

Design

The Steam Deck features two analog sticks and two trackpads flanking the display, with a D-pad on the left and X/Y/A/B buttons on the right. The View and Menu buttons function as Select and Pause during gameplay, while the Steam and Quick Access buttons provide easy access to SteamOS.

You’ll find the volume controls, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a USB-C port, and a power button between the shoulder buttons. Additionally, the underside houses four programmable back buttons and an SD card slot. Two speakers are positioned below the Steam and Quick Access buttons, with air vents along the top for cooling. Valve kept the Steam Deck’s design unchanged since it already looked great. Plus, the new Steam Deck retains the exact dimensions of the original, so it’s compatible with any existing cases or skins you might have.

Display

The Steam Deck’s OLED display is imposing. It’s brighter than before, and the enhanced contrast between dark and light elements makes colors appear incredibly vivid. Thanks to thinner bezels, the display is now 7.4 inches wide, up from 7 inches, offering an even more immersive visual experience. While games like  Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. They looked great on the original LCD screen, and they are stunning on the OLED version, thanks to the vibrant image quality. Enabling HDR in these games was particularly impressive; the bright neon lights in Cyberpunk 2077 were dazzling.

The screen’s brightness is at 597 nits, which is not only brighter than the Lenovo Legion Go (476 nits) and Asus ROG Ally (465 nits) but also significantly brighter than the original Steam Deck, which had an average brightness of 169 nits. When testing HDR luminance, the Steam Deck reached 969 nits of brightness with HDR content. While it didn’t quite hit the advertised 1,000 nits, it’s still an impressive brightness that enhances the overall experience.

In terms of color, the Steam Deck OLED covers 143.7% of the sRGB color gamut and 101.8% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space, which indicates excellent color saturation. The screen also scores 0.22 on the Delta-E test for color accuracy, where a lower score is better.

Comparatively, the Legion Go (151.8% / 107.5% / 0.21) showed more oversaturated colors, and the Asus ROG Ally (108.6% / 76.9% / 0.17) produced less saturated hues. Against these, the original Steam Deck’s screen (68.5% / 48.5% / 0.25) appears lackluster. Overall, the new OLED display is a significant upgrade. Its vivid colors, brightness, and anti-glare features create a fantastic visual experience that you need to see to believe.

Controls

The Steam Deck OLED retains the familiar controller layout, consistent with what you’d expect from most modern gaming controllers. While the buttons are a bit larger than those on the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers, they’re slightly smaller than the ones on the Xbox Series X or PS5 DualSense controllers.A noticeable improvement in this new model is the design of the thumbsticks, which are now more concave, providing a more comfortable grip during extended gaming sessions.

The thumbsticks and buttons offer a satisfying resistance level, ensuring every movement and press feels responsive and precise. The back buttons are intuitively positioned where your middle and ring fingers naturally rest, making them easy to access without shifting your grip.  This layout ensures that the Steam Deck is ideally suited for a wide range of games, whether navigating the dystopian streets of Cyberpunk 2077, dodging demons in Doom Eternal, or swinging through the city in Marvel’s Spider-Man

The controls are responsive and natural, seamlessly transitioning from console or PC to handheld gaming. The controls’ tactile feedback and ergonomic placement make gameplay enjoyable, whether playing fast-paced shooters or exploring open-world environments.

However, for RTS games like Command & Conquer: Remastered, the trackpads under the analog sticks can feel awkward. Despite this, the overall control experience on the Steam Deck OLED is impressive, maintaining the high standard set by its predecessor. Most gamers appreciate the controls of the original Steam Deck, so they are pleased with how the new model feels. Everything about it feels great, and it is a joy to use for any gaming experience.

Performance

The Steam Deck OLED is equipped with an upgraded Zen 2 AMD chip, now built on a 6nm process compared to the 7nm chip in the previous model. Despite this update, the new handheld’s performance closely matches its predecessor’s. For some, this could be a letdown if they expected a noticeable performance boost. However, the consistent performance across both versions highlights the Steam Deck’s solid gaming capabilities, particularly given its specifications.

The OLED model delivers comparable gaming experiences without compromising frame rates or fluidity. One key aspect is that the Steam Deck OLED competes well against other handhelds with more advanced hardware. It holds its own even compared to devices like the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, benchmarked at 1080p resolution. Meanwhile, the Steam Deck OLED runs at its native 720p resolution, making the most of its hardware to deliver smooth and enjoyable gameplay.

Overall, the Steam Deck OLED’s performance is reliable and consistent, making it an excellent choice for handheld gaming. It may not offer a significant leap in power, but it delivers where it counts—providing solid gaming experiences across various titles. The improved chip and the vibrant OLED display work together to ensure that games look and feel great, reinforcing Steam Deck’s position as a strong contender in the handheld gaming market.

Battery Life

Valve has stated that the Steam Deck OLED boasts 30-50% more battery life thanks to its larger battery and the energy efficiency of its OLED display. The updated AMD APU is also designed to enhance battery longevity. From various tests, the Steam Deck OLED indeed outlasts its predecessor.

The Steam Deck OLED also shows improvement in terms of heat management. The system’s vents don’t heat up as much as they did on the original model. While the air from the top vents is warm, it’s far from uncomfortable. This is a positive change, which means the device is better at managing heat during prolonged gaming sessions. Additionally, since the vents are not located near the hands, you won’t feel the warmth directly, ensuring a more comfortable experience.

Overall, the Steam Deck OLED not only extends your gaming sessions but also keeps its cool while doing so. These enhancements make it a more reliable and enjoyable handheld gaming device, especially for those who value longer battery life and better thermal performance.

Outlook

The Steam Deck OLED takes an already impressive handheld and elevates it to new heights, making it the go-to choice for newcomers and dedicated Steam Deck enthusiasts. The stunning OLED display is a standout feature, delivering vibrant colors and deep contrasts that enhance every gaming experience. Beyond the display, upgrades like faster Wi-Fi, a lighter design, and improved cooling make this version of the Steam Deck even more appealing. The Steam Deck OLED solidifies its place as the top handheld gaming device and sets a new benchmark for others to aspire to.
