Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 overview
After reigning for years, Samsung faced a significant challenge in the foldable phone space last year. While the Galaxy Z Flip 5 marked a significant improvement in flip-style phones, it was overshadowed by Motorola Razr Plus 2023. Not surprisingly, Samsung is now back to challenge its rival with the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
You’ll notice significant upgrades in the Galaxy Z Flip 6, such as its new 50MP main camera, a durable design, and a more functional Flex Window display. In typical fashion, this foldable phone also features many of the Galaxy AI features you fell in love with in your Galaxy S24 Ultra review — along with a few new ones you haven’t seen before. Plus, there’s a strong emphasis on personalization and durability. Visually, it’s essentially the same phone as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 – except for some color-matched rings around the rear camera lenses and a sleek satin finish for the frame.
Design
At first glance, the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s design may not have changed much. It remains incredibly compact when closed and retains its solid feel with an aluminum casing. The size and design of the FlexWindow also appear identical to Z Flip 5’s, including the fin cutout on the bottom right where the display meets the cameras. The good news is that this tried-and-tested design still works well. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 features the same 3.4-inch, 60Hz AMOLED cover display and 6.7-inch, Full HD+ AMOLED main display as its predecessor.
The larger of these two screens boasts an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. The phone measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm unfolded and 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm when folded, and it weighs just 187g, which again matches the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Samsung has also bolstered the Flip 6’s durability with a new dual rail hinge design, resulting in a more responsive feel whenever you close it. Additionally, the crease in the middle of the phone appears much softer than its predecessor.
Durability
According to Samsung, the Armor Aluminum frame encasing the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is 10% stronger than before, with reinforced hinges and edges. Most notably, the new IP48 dust- and water-resistance rating surpasses the water-only IPX8 rating of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, though it falls slightly short of the Galaxy S24’s completely dust-proof IP68 rating. In simple terms, this means the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is protected against particles larger than 1mm, such as large dust particles. These durability features make the Galaxy Z Flip 6 the most practical flip phone yet.
Colors
As much as the Galaxy Z Flip 6 retains much of its design from the Z Flip 5, it offers a more vibrant color palette. Unlike the Z Flip 5, where the color was limited to a single back panel, the entire frame of the Z Flip 6 reflects your chosen color. One important thing to note is that the new pastel-like color options for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 enhance its overall design.
The camera lens outlines are highlighted with the same color scheme, creating a more appealing contrast and a retro robot-like look. This cohesive color scheme adds a touch of style and makes the color options stand out. Available colors include Yellow, Silver Shadow, Mint, and Blue, with exclusive colors Crafted in Black, White, and Peach.
Display
The display specifications remain identical to last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5. You still get a 3.4-inch 60Hz AMOLED on the outside and a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED with a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120 Hz inside. Even so, the primary display impresses with its vibrant colors and wide viewing angles. Samsung says it can reach a peak brightness of 2,600 nits.
The significant improvements are with the 3.4-inch FlexWindow, which is now more customizable. You can swipe through various widgets and combine them into a single home screen layout, making it more convenient. Also pleasant are the new interactive lock screens that respond to touch and movement, such as a donut that moves around when you tilt or rotate the phone.
These new personalization options for the FlexWindow are fantastic, but accessing full apps still requires a workaround, such as downloading the Good Lock app. While not all apps are optimized for FlexWindow, using them is enjoyable, especially when scrolling through social media apps.
Cameras
For photography enthusiasts, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 offers a significant upgrade with a 50MP wide-angle main camera, substantially improving over the Z Flip 5’s 12MP lens. This boost in resolution and detail promises even better selfies and overall photo quality. The 50MP camera benefits from pixel binning technology, providing a 2x zoom with optical-like quality, effectively mimicking the range of a triple-camera setup in a more compact dual-camera arrangement. This more innovative approach enhances your photo experience while maintaining the phone’s sleek design.
Of course, megapixels aren’t the sole measure of a camera’s quality, but the combination of Samsung’s proven camera technology and AI enhancements should be highly beneficial. The foldable’s ProVisual Engine aims to capture even more detailed portraits and snaps. Camera AI features such as Edit Suggestions, Generative Edit, Instant Slo-mo, and more provide numerous ways to customize your shots.
A new camcorder mode offers a nostalgic feel when the phone is folded halfway, complete with zoom controls at your fingertips. Another innovative feature is the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s AI zoom, which intelligently frames your shots, whether you’re capturing a selfie or a group photo — the AI zoom will automatically adjust to frame the shot perfectly.
Selfie Camera Specs
The 10 MP, f/2.2 wide-angle lens supports HDR and can record 4K video at 30fps, making it perfect for high-quality selfies and video calls.
Main Camera:
- 50 MP, f/1.8 wide-angle lens
- Dual Pixel PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus)
- OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)
- Designed to capture more light and detail, enhancing low-light performance and overall image quality
Ultra-Wide Camera:
- 12 MP, f/2.2 lens
- 123° field of view
- It is ideal for capturing vast landscapes and group photos.
Battery
At the phones Store Kenya, we are highly optimistic about the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s battery life, especially with the upgrade to a 4,000 mAh capacity from the Z Flip 5’s 3,700 mAh, given the power efficiency observed from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip in other phones. However, Samsung hasn’t improved the charging speeds with the Galaxy Z Flip 6, leaving it at 25W wired and 15W wireless speeds.
Power Management Features
- Power Saving Mode: You can enable Power Saving Mode to extend battery life by reducing performance, limiting background data, and turning off features.
- Adaptive Power Saving: This feature adjusts power usage based on usage patterns to optimize battery life.
- Battery Usage Monitoring: The device allows you to monitor battery usage by apps and provides tips for extending battery life.
Charging
- Wired Charging: It supports 25W wired charging, allowing quick recharges (QC2.0, 50% in 30 minutes).
- Wireless Charging: Supports wireless charging at a slower rate of 10-15W.
- Reverse Charging: Supports 4.5W reverse charging.
Performance
Indeed, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is powered by the same chip used in Samsung’s flagship phones: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Animations and navigating around the interface feel ultra-responsive. The chip drives these fluid actions, complementing the display’s 120 Hz dynamic refresh rate.
It’s impressive how quickly the phone can generate AI-enhanced portrait photos. The results will be similarly strong, given this chip’s extreme performance and benchmark scores in other phones.
Memory Support
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 supports LPDDR5X memory, providing a maximum bandwidth of 77 Gbit/s and up to 24 GB of RAM. Specifically, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 model comes in two versions:
- 256GB internal storage with 12GB of RAM
- 512GB internal storage with 12GB of RAM
You can choose between 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, both paired with 12GB of RAM. However, it’s important to note that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 does not support expandable storage via microSD.
A Cooler Experience
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 introduces the first-ever vapor chamber to its series, ensuring it remains cool under pressure even when handling demanding apps and games like Zenless Zone Zero and Alien Isolation from the Google Play Store.
Software and AI Integration
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 runs on Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 Android 14. The interface feels familiar to anyone who has used a recent Galaxy phone. However, the Flip 6 comes with the same Galaxy AI features first introduced by the S24 series. These features include Instant Slow-Mo, Generative Edit, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, and more.
Exclusive to the Flip 6 is a Suggested Replies feature, which generates tailored replies to text messages on the FlexWindow display. It’s similar to the AI-generated responses in Chat Assist but designed for the smaller outer screen. One Galaxy AI feature that feels more practical on the Flip 6 than on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is Interpreter Mode. You can position the phone halfway, with both screens showing translated conversations with the other person.
Additionally, the AI-powered Photo Ambient feature adds a touch of personalization to your wallpaper by subtly changing it according to the time and weather, and it lets you select the frame color around the wallpaper. The Gallery app includes the new Photo Assist feature, which transforms images into sketches using AI. Of course, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 also benefits from the same seven years of software and security updates as the Galaxy S24.
