    Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Overview

Forget the other wearables in the market; the new Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra might be the rugged, feature-packed smartwatch to beat in 2024. Featuring a scratch-resistant titanium case, 100 meters of water resistance, impressive battery life, and exceptional health and fitness tracking capabilities, the new Galaxy Ultra is more than just an attractive accessory. Priced at Ksh 70000, it’s still more affordable than its Apple counterpart, though it’s double the cost of the new Galaxy Watch 7.

    Features

    • Processor: The Galaxy Watch Ultra features the latest Exynos W1000 processor, which is shared with the Galaxy Watch 7. This processor offers three times the speed and 30% greater efficiency than the previous model.
    • Design: The Ultra sports a distinctive 47mm square-ish case, three physical buttons on the right side, and a round 1.5-inch AMOLED screen, marking a shift from earlier Galaxy Watch designs. It also includes a customizable Quick Button for added convenience.
    • Display: The screen brightness peaks at 3,000 nits, matching the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
    • Build Quality: Engineered for extreme conditions, the Ultra boasts 100 meters of water resistance and is rated to operate at depths of up to 500 meters below sea level and altitudes as high as 9,000 meters above.
    • Battery: Equipped with a 590 mAh battery, the Ultra delivers just over four days of power in Power Saving Mode and up to 40 hours in Exercise Power Saving Mode with GPS.
    • Health Monitoring: The latest BioActive Health sensor, which is FDA-approved, can detect sleep apnea and offer insights into metabolic health and body composition.
    • AI Wellness Features: Users receive a daily Energy Score backed by AI and personalized wellness tips.
    • Software: Alongside the Galaxy Watch 7, the Ultra is the first Android smartwatch to debut with Wear OS 5.
    • Fitness Tracking: The Ultra supports personalized heart rate zones and can track complex multisport activities, such as triathlons.

    Design

Samsung has maintained its commitment to the circular smartwatch legacy with the Galaxy Watch Ultra by embedding a round 44mm display within a square circle-shaped chassis. The resemblance is evident but less square than the Apple Watch Ultra.  This design also introduces an orange quick button between the two existing side buttons. This customizable button can automatically start workouts, transition to different segments, or switch to the next workout profile using the new Multisports tile, which supports disciplines like triathlon. It can also activate the flashlight or trigger the watch’s 85-decibel safety siren.

The Galaxy Watch has activity-specific watch bands, including the Marine and Trail bands, available in colors that match the different titanium finishes. Regarding durability, the casing comes from aerospace-grade titanium, and the redesigned thick silicone bands, made explicitly for the Watch Ultra, incorporate partially recycled plastics. The casing is fully dive-proof with IP68 and 10ATM ratings and is built to withstand extreme low and high temperatures, meeting military-grade standards.

    Display

The Galaxy Watch Ultra boasts a 1.5-inch AMOLED display with a sharp 480×480 resolution and an impressive peak brightness of 3,000 nits, ensuring excellent visibility even under direct sunlight, much like the Apple Watch Ultra. However, the Galaxy Watch Ultra does not include Samsung’s signature hardware rotating bezel. This omission may be due to the smartwatch’s enhanced water resistance, as incorporating a large rotating bezel could compromise its ability to withstand water ingress.

    Water Resistance

Speaking of water resistance, the Galaxy Watch Ultra has an IP68 rating for 10ATM water resistance. This feature allows the watch to be submerged in up to 100 meters of water, though such depths are likely beyond the typical use for most users.

    Features

There are plenty of new features to discuss in the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra. At 85 decibels, the emergency siren is loud and designed to signal for help if you’re in trouble outdoors.

    Software and Performance

The Galaxy Watch Ultra features Google’s Wear OS 5, which introduces several enhancements. One notable addition is an optional grid-based app launcher, which gives users a more organized way to access their apps. You can also choose your media output device directly from Wear OS 5. Furthermore, the update improves watch faces, including fresh themes and a new heart rate data source. The Double Pinch Gestures, similar to those on the Apple Watch Ultra, are now available on the Galaxy Watch Ultra.

    Making and Receiving Calls

With the cellular-enabled version of the Galaxy Watch Ultra, you can make and take calls independently of your phone, just like previous Samsung smartwatches. The Bluetooth-only version also supports calling features, but you must keep your phone nearby. Regarding haptics, Samsung watches have consistently delivered excellent haptic feedback, characterized by precise and strong vibrations. There’s no reason to expect anything less from the Galaxy Watch Ultra in this regard.

    GPS

Activities like hikes, runs, swims, and rides benefit from the new precision dual-frequency GPS for added accuracy. These GPS workouts utilize older features, such as the TrackBack functionality first introduced on the 5 ProThis feature allows you to retrace your steps on a GPS-driven route, following directions until you return to your starting point—a convenient feature. Dive mode, similar to the Apple Watch Ultra, includes a water lock and a function to eject any water from the system, accompanied by a series of conspicuous beeps.

    Health Monitoring

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is poised to offer Samsung’s most comprehensive health-tracking experience to date. It combines essential features found on flagship models, such as automatic workout tracking and sleep monitoring, with additional specialized capabilities. Alongside the new multi-sport tile and Functional Threshold Power (FTP) biking metrics, the Galaxy Watch Ultra introduces personalized heart rate zones to help you train at optimal intensity.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s health features are powered by Samsung’s upgraded BioActive sensor, which integrates PPG heart rate monitoring, ECG, blood oxygen levels, and bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) for body composition readings. This wealth of data supports new Galaxy AI features, including Energy Score, Wellness Tips, and an advanced sleep AI algorithm. The Galaxy Watch Ultra also introduces the Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) Index, which evaluates metabolic health and biological aging based on lifestyle and dietary habits.

    Battery Life

Battery life is shaping up to be a significant selling point for the Galaxy Watch Ultra. According to Samsung, The Galaxy Watch Ultra boasts a substantial 590mAh battery, potentially making it one of the most enduring smartwatches on the market.  It can last up to 100 hours in power-saving mode and 48 hours in exercise power-saving mode. This energy efficiency is attributed to the new 3nm Exynos chip, which has significantly enhanced power management. The smartwatch supports 15W charging, which allows it to charge fully in around an hour and a half.

    All Said and Done

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is poised to be Samsung’s direct competitor to the Apple Watch Ultra and Watch Ultra 2. As a high-end device, it promises to be one of the top smartwatches available for Android users. We hope that Samsung will enhance the experience with many compelling features.
