Within the Samsung stable, the S series has always prided itself for its flagship status, always having the newest, latest and most powerful features, not only among Samsung phones but at times across most Android offerings. This year’s candidate, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is no different, released in March 2020. It is one shining flagship with zero effort spared to make it the king of the flagships.
Design and display of the Samsung Galaxy S20
The first thing you notice once you lay your hands on the Samsung Galaxy S20 is the insanely beautiful display, a 6.7inch AMOLED display, WQHD+ with 1440p resolution. It has an Infinity O punch out display design to accommodate the selfie camera and its very noticeable just how thin the bezels on all sides are. The screen is a 120Hz display (at FHD), the very first on a non-gaming phone, which can be bumped down to 60Hz (at QHD) if need be. It has Corning Gorilla 6 protection and an impressive screen to body ratio of 89.5%. It has an aluminum frame that blends into the glass back that hosts the rectangular triple camera set up.
Performance and storage
The Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with very best chipsets, the Snapdragon 865 for the US version and the Exynos 900 for the rest of the international market. It comes paired with an octa-core 2×2.73GHz Mongoose M5 and the other six cores being a Cortex A76/A55 CPU combo, while the GPU is the new Adreno 650. The internal memory configuration choice is 8GB for RAM and 128/256GB for ROMUFS 3.0 in the base model, with a hybrid microSDXC expandable memory slot that it shares with one other sim. This gives off one of the most powerful devices in the market right now, and there is absolutely nothing this phone can’t do, including the higher graphics intensive games in the market. Everything feels, and is, a breeze to it.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with a triple camera set up, with the main primary camera being a 12mp shooter, with a 12mp ultra-wide lens and the impressive 64mp telephoto shooter, with up to 3x zoom. The extra bump is for a time of flight depth sensor. The telephoto lens allows an astounding up to 30x digital zoom, an improvement from S10 Plus 10x digital zoom. The pictures are amazing, very well detailed, sharp and rich in color. It doesn’t get better than this. The Night Mode has been improved with software upgrades, delivering some of the best low light photos in the market. In addition to the usual Live Focus, Panorama, etc modes, there is a new Single Take mode, that takes several pictures and uses AI to choose the best among them and create a mini album. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is capable of shooting up to 8K video, which is insane as very few screens are capable of showing 8K. So, 4K is a fav, 24fps,2160p at 30/60fps, 1080at 30/60/240fps and 720p at up to 960fps. It is capable of dual video recording (main and selfie cameras simultaneously) and stereo sound recording. It has both electronic and optical image stabilization. On the selfie side is a capable 10mp 26mm wide lens, capable of dual video call main and selfie) and records 2160p at 30/60 and 1080p at 30fps. The portrait mode is crazy, with excellent edge detection and believable distance variance
The battery in the Samsung Galaxy S20 hasn’t improved much. We still get the old 4000mAh non removable Li-Po battery, which is not optimal, considering the power consuming 120Hz display and top end SoC. But as a reprieve, it supports 25W fast charging, with charging brick coming with the box, in addition to fast wireless charging of up to 15W and reverse wireless charging of 9W, incase a friend or one your devices needs to be topped up. This capacity is capable of holding beyond a days’ worth of typical use, but only if the screens refresh rate is reduced. Otherwise, the battery life will suffer.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with the new Android 10 based One UI 2, so expect all the good features that come with the Samsung ecosystem. Expect the new and improved interface overlay package and system apps that endear most to the One UI. It has been redesigned to give it a newer lighter and modern feel. Samsung Galaxy S20 offers the best software experience, as other than the powerful chip, the high screen refresh rate makes it feel like the most responsive OS interaction on any phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 has truly lived to its legend. It’s very refreshing that Samsung continues to bring their screen making prowess to their phones while making various improvements on the camera and battery. This phone offers the best of the best so it is hardly one to critique. Although it no longer spots the 3.5mm jack, it thankfully comes IP68 rated for dust/water resistance of up to 1.5m for 30mins. It comes in Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink, Cloud white and Aura Red.
