Intro
OnePlus has come a long way, from the humble days of the flagship killer to now being a flagship by its right. The One Plus 8 Pro is probably the most complete phone One Plus has ever produced, ticking pretty much every box a flagship should. The specifications include a 90Hz AMOLED display, a quad camera, wireless charging, and IP68 dust/water resistance. The expected price in Kenya is Ksh 100,000. Let see the review.
Design
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED display, with a left-aligned punch out to accommodate the front-facing camera. The HDR 10+ screen has a smooth 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate. The screen has very narrow bezels all around, and its beautiful to look at. It has a waterfall design, therefore the screen bends in at the edge, to give off an infinity feel to screen viewing angles.
Gorilla Glass 5 screen and back sandwiches an aluminum frame. At the bottom, we have the speaker grill capable of stereo sound, a USB-C connector but no 3.5 mm jack. The screen utilizes the under-display fingerprint sensor, in addition to face unlocking bio-metrics. Finally, we get an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Performance
Now, OnePlus 8 Pro comes bundled with the topmost Snapdragon 865 chipset, a Kyro 585 CPU and an Adreno 650 GPU. The memory options onboard is a huge 12 GB for RAM and 128/256 GB for UFS 3.0 mass storage. There is no option for expandable storage which is rather disappointing. The SoC configuration is the top tier to lend support to the fluid AMOLED screen and the monstrous camera configuration. It is expected to perform nothing short of some of the best solid flagship status, taking on pretty much everything with ease.
Camera
The OnePlus has been trying to bring their cameras to par with the rest of the competition. Feels like they finally arrived. The One Plus 8 Pro primary camera is a 48 mp wide lens, a 48 mp ultra-wide lens with a 116-degree field of view, an 8 mp telephoto, and a 5 mp depth/color filter shooter. This set up offers solid performance, augmented by One Plus’s optimized camera software to deliver sharp, clear, and true to life pictures.
The Night Mode got a massive upgrade, with the huge sensor letting in more light hence the photos are better exposed. Video is up to 4K at 60fps, with the assistance of electronic image stabilization, offering Go-Pro like stable video. The selfie camera is a 16 mp shooter, with Auto-HDR and gyro-EIS, capable of 1080p video in 30fps. The selfies are easily some of the best in this segment.
Battery
OnePlus 8 Pro comes with the decent 4510 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery which should easily get you past the whole day, with a little left afterward. It also comes with the impressive 3.1 Type C 30W fast charging, capable of filling 50% of the phone in 23 mins. Also, we finally get wireless charging, 30W capable of 50% in 30 mins. We also get reverse wireless charging, albeit just 3W. There is nothing now that can put users at a disadvantage.
Software
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with Android 10 based Oxygen OS 10. This is one of the things that OnePlus is famous for. Oxygen OS offers an almost stock Android experience, with almost no bloatware on board. Hence faster updates and an optimal experience. There may be little tweaks within the system but overall, it feels like a Goggle Pixel in terms of the UI experience. A far cry from the heavy customization other brands tend to choose when it comes to their android skins.
Final remarks
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a solid flagship of 2020. A 90 Hz screen, top SD 865 chip, massive camera configuration. Wireless charging, and IP68 certification are some of the things that make this phone a true flagship. It has come a long way from its humble beginnings but augmented with its almost stock android experience. It is finally ready to take a seat with industry royalty.
