Realme Pad 2 Review
The past few years have ushered in a favorable array of tablet choices for consumers, particularly with the surge in tablet demand following the onset of the pandemic. In the tablet market, there has been a consistent year-on-year growth trend. While iPads had historically dominated this category, recent years have witnessed a substantial surge in the Android Tablet Market within Kenya.
Within the year 2023 itself, the Kenyan market has been graced by the presence of two prominent Android tablets—the OnePlus Pad and the Xiaomi Pad 6. However, it’s noteworthy that the entry point for these tablets begins at a price point exceeding Ksh 32,000. This is where the Realme Pad 2 emerges as a convenient solution, positioning itself as a quintessential tablet that emphasizes affordability and practicality. The Realme Pad 2 doesn’t aim to deliver cutting-edge specifications or unparalleled performance but rather focuses on fulfilling its intended role.
Equipped with the Dimensity G99 chipset, coupled with an impressive battery capacity exceeding 8000mAh, 4G connectivity, and a spacious display, the specifications appear satisfactory on paper. The key question, however, remains: Is the Realme Pad 2 genuinely worth the investment of 32k? Let’s embark on the journey of exploration to find our answer.
Display
The Realme Pad 2 boasts a minimalist and dependable design that radiates sturdiness. Available in two color options—Green and Gray—I had the opportunity to explore the captivating Inspiration Green variant. The back panel exhibits a dual-tone color scheme, each shade offering a distinct tactile feel. The metallic finish coupled with the textured camera module imparts a subtle yet noticeable contrast. The matte section houses a circular camera module housing an 8MP lens, while the Realme branding is elegantly etched into the lower right corner of the rear surface. The tablet’s rear exudes an allure that might lead one to mistake it for a higher-priced device, indicating Realme’s adeptness in the aesthetics department.
With flat edges and a sleek slate-like design, the pad sits comfortably in hand. While the weight distribution is acceptable, the total weight of 576 grams can become cumbersome during prolonged use. Measuring 7.2mm in thickness, the pad’s expansive display size, albeit impressive, renders it slightly unwieldy for handheld usage. In terms of button placement, the power button shares the top edge with a duo of speakers, while the bottom edge accommodates a USB Type-C port alongside two additional speakers. The right edge integrates the volume rockers, and the left side houses the dedicated SIM card slot. The absence of a fingerprint sensor is notable, with face unlock serving as the primary biometric authentication method—par for the course in this price range. Regrettably, a 3.5mm headphone jack is omitted, potentially posing an inconvenience for users who rely on wired earphones. However, this omission might not be a concern for users embracing TWS Bluetooth earbuds. The Pad 2 earns an IP52 rating for water and dust resistance, alleviating worries about usage during travel or in less controlled environments.
The display emerges as a standout feature of the Realme Pad 2, a pivotal aspect that can sway potential buyers toward a tablet. The brand’s assertion that the Realme Pad 2 serves both productivity and entertainment needs materializes through an 11.5-inch 2K LCD display, boasting a pixel resolution of 2000×1200. The expansive display dimensions translate to larger visuals, complemented by commendable color accuracy and satisfactory HDR outcomes. The tablet supports HD content for popular OTT apps like Prime Video and Netflix, ensuring an uncompromised viewing experience on the larger canvas. The screen rendered low-light shots attractively, albeit colors exhibited a subtle shift when viewed from different angles—a minor drawback that slightly affects viewing angles. As an avid reader, I was pleased with the Realme Pad 2’s performance for e-books, particularly on platforms like Amazon Kindle. The 120Hz refresh rate greatly enhances the reading experience. Notably, the Pad 2 has been upgraded from its predecessor’s 90Hz refresh rate to an impressive 120Hz, rendering scrolling, reading, and gaming noticeably smoother. While an adaptive refresh rate could have further elevated the experience, the display remains notably smooth and responsive.
Camera
When it comes to budget tablets or pads, imaging and camera capabilities have rarely stood out as strengths. The Realme Pad 2 continues this trend, offering a camera setup that doesn’t deviate from the norm. Positioned at the rear, the Pad 2 houses an 8MP camera that serves well for tasks like document scanning and video calls. However, beyond these functionalities, it’s best not to anticipate impressive image quality. Despite Realme branding it as a ‘super camera’, the actual performance doesn’t align with this moniker. Captured images lack detail, colors appear overly saturated, and distortion is evident along the edges. Although slightly better results might be achieved in favorable lighting conditions, nighttime photography proves challenging, rendering the camera practically ineffective. Even daytime shots fail to meet the standards for social media sharing.
On the front side, an 8MP sensor is responsible for capturing selfies and facilitating on-the-go video calls. While the selfies maintain a degree of focus on the subject and present natural skin tones, they tend to lack fine details, and the color palette leans toward cooler tones—distinct from the primary camera’s tendency for oversaturation. Achieving usable selfies might require multiple attempts to find the right shot. The primary 8MP camera offers 1080p video recording at 30fps. However, mirroring its photo capabilities, the video recording is marked by a dearth of detail and the presence of warm colors, limiting its overall quality.
Performance
Performance stands as a pivotal facet for any device, and to deliver a commendable experience, Realme has outfitted the Realme Pad 2 with the MediaTek Dimensity G99 chipset. The G99 chipset is a familiar presence in the budget tablet arena, finding its home in devices like the Redmi Pad. The tablet arrives with two RAM and storage configurations; The 8GB RAM capacity adeptly handles a spectrum of demanding tasks, encompassing gaming, media consumption, video calls, and audio playback. The tablet excels in multitasking, ensuring smooth transitions between applications devoid of noticeable lag or interruptions. Additionally, the inclusion of a 4GB virtual RAM expansion option enhances multitasking capabilities. This feature empowers users seeking even faster performance, allowing them to augment the RAM up to 12GB. Switching between apps active in the background also unfolds seamlessly.
One standout feature of the Realme Pad 2, absent in some of its competitors, is the dedicated SIM card slot. This tablet supports 4G LTE voice calling, enabling users to utilize their mobile number directly on the Pad for making and receiving calls on the move. This eliminates the need to keep a smartphone nearby while traveling with the Pad. Nevertheless, it’s essential to acknowledge a drawback when it comes to calling—the tablet’s substantial weight and substantial size. For calls, utilizing the speakerphone mode proves more comfortable, as positioning a tablet of this magnitude against one’s ear to converse through the microphone can be rather awkward. Moreover, extended phone calls can lead to arm fatigue due to the tablet’s bulkiness.
Battery
The Realme Pad 2 is equipped with a robust 8360mAh battery, demonstrating its mettle as a steadfast powerhouse. Throughout my usage, I engaged in a variety of tasks, including video streaming, article writing, and video calls with my family. Remarkably, even after these activities, I found myself needing to charge the tablet only twice within a span of 6 days. It was only during sessions of watching Instagram reels that I noticed an accelerated battery consumption rate. Generally, for light users, the battery’s endurance can extend beyond 3 days—a commendable feat.
The tablet boasts support for 33W fast charging. However, due to the substantial battery capacity, it takes slightly over two hours to replenish the battery from 0 to 100%. In an era where wired charging speeds have pushed to the vicinity of 240W, the charging duration might feel prolonged. Improved charging speeds could certainly enhance the overall user experience.
Conclusion
The Realme Pad 2 doesn’t position itself as a top-tier tablet; however, it aptly serves as a sizable screen solution for fundamental daily requirements. Tasks such as participating in video calls, perusing books, indulging in content consumption, engaging in video chats, social media browsing, and more are well accommodated. The tablet presents a sleek profile and encompasses 4G LTE connectivity, making it particularly suitable for usage in smaller Indian cities. Despite the tablet’s bulkiness and subpar camera configuration, its strength lies in an optimized operating system and an affordable price point that aligns with the budgets of the average consumer. For individuals seeking a tablet that satisfactorily addresses everyday needs without straining their finances, the Realme Pad 2 stands out as a viable choice.
