The Xiaomi Black Shark 5 RS 5G is the latest iteration in Xiaomi’s game-centric phone series, The Black Shark. It packs a flagship Snapdragon 888+ 5G chipset, a huge 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen, a great 64MP camera, a huge 4500 mAh battery, 120W fast charging, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. There are not many flagship gaming phones to compare with, but the physical pop-up buttons totally make this one stand out.
Design
The Xiaomi Black Shark 5 RS 5G comes with a 6.67-inch 144Hz OLED screen with a punch hole design for the selfie camera. It’s a massive screen, with an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10+ which helps enjoy gaming all the way to 4K. It has an aluminum frame, a glass back, and a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus front panel. It is quite bright and vivid, peaking at 1300 nits. It’s rated for IP53 dust and splash protection. As a gaming phone, it has the added advantage of physical pop-up gaming triggers, which brings an extra feel to gaming, like in the rather more traditional Nintendo. Like many Xiaomi phones, it comes with an IR blaster and, fortunately, a headphone jack. It has a physical fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed on its side, integrated into the power button. It supports stereo speakers, which are great for playing media and playing games.
Performance
The Xiaomi Black Shark 5 RS 5G brings in the heat with the flagship Snapdragon 888+ 5G chipset, making it very fast and great for gaming. It has a Cortex 3.0Ghz Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 660 GPU, with storage options of 8/12 GB for RAM & 256 GB for ROM. It however does not come with an expandable memory option, which shouldn’t be a problem. Paired with the 120Hz screen, running the latest Android 12 with Joy 13 UI, the gaming-focused variant of the MIUI, the performance is optimized for gaming, and other intensive uses. Everything feels fast, fluid, and rich in color.
Cameras
The Xiaomi Black Shark 5 RS 5G has a triple camera arrangement on the back, starting with a huge 64 MP primary sensor, for those excellent daylight photos. There is an extra 8MP ultrawide and a 5MP depth camera for the portrait or bokeh effect, and to an extent, helps take macro pictures. The video can support up to 4K at 30/60 fps and 1080p video at 120 fps, with HDR support & gyro-EIS stability assistance. The selfie camera is a decent 20MP wide sensor, capable of 1080p video at 60fps. The selfies are great and well-lit.
Other features
We can’t fail to mention the charging speeds in the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 RS 5G. At 120W fast charging, the phone can get fully charged in about 15 minutes. That in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 4500mAh non-removable battery, which is rather generous. Even with the high refresh rate screen, this should be worth many hours’ worth of gaming. The main concession would be that there is no reverse wired charging. It supports NFC for contactless paying. The main talking point would be the fact that its optimized for gaming, which means it has one of the highest clocked CPUs on phone, handling any task with ease.
