Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 overview
Are we finally ready for a foldable phone with enhanced AI features? With the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung makes a compelling case for embracing the foldable future. Though it might look similar to its predecessor at first glance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 introduces numerous enhancements. It boasts a thinner and lighter design. When folded, it measures 12.1mm thick, making it comparable in bulk and comfort to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Weighing 239 grams, it’s 14 grams lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, further boosting its portability.
Samsung has also refined the cover display, making it slightly bigger and broader to eliminate the claustrophobic feel of earlier models. The main display now shines brighter at 2,600 nits. Despite these size and weight reductions, the screen is 2.7mm wider, and the cover screen has a millimeter more width with smaller bezels, subtly altering the aspect ratio for a better user experience.
Durability has been significantly improved with more robust foldable glass layers, addressing common concerns about fragility. Typing, swiping, and interacting with the cover screen is now more enjoyable. You’ll find many built-in AI features, like various Galaxy AI capabilities and convenient access to Google Gemini. You can try out many of these excellent functions, such as a fantastic live interpreter app and a tool that transforms your S Pen doodles into art. Pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 6 now in Kenya at the Phones Store. It will be available starting from August 2024.
Design and Display
Design
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has shed a significant amount of weight. You’ll notice Samsung has trimmed its thickness while enhancing the overall durability of this flagship foldable. Carrying the Z Fold 6 in your pocket is now much easier. It weighs 8.4 ounces, lighter than the Fold 5’s 8.9 ounces, so it won’t weigh your pocket as much. The straight-edge design makes it sleek, though you might find the corner uncomfortable when holding the closed phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is also made to be tougher than the Z Fold 5 with more durable foldable glass layers and better resistance to pressure from poking and the S Pen. There’s also Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back and an Armour Aluminum hinge.
Display
Samsung has made the cover display a bit larger on the Z Fold 6, increasing it from 6.2 to 6.3 inches compared to the Z Fold 5 and widening the panel slightly. While not a monumental change, it’s a welcome one that makes the screen more comfortable for typing with two hands.
Apps on the cover display can now run without feeling too cramped. Inside, you’ll find a 7.6-inch OLED display with a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. This is the same size as before but significantly improved over the Z Fold 5’s 1,750 nits. This means your content will look brighter and clearer, enhancing your viewing experience.
The Hinges
The Z Fold’s folding mechanism has been refined since 2019. When closed, the original device had a teardrop-shaped gap, meaning each half didn’t lie flat against the other. At the time, this didn’t really stand out as odd, but it’s a dramatic change when you compare it to the alliteration on the Z Fold 6.
What stands out most about the hinge on the latest Fold models is that it is resistant when you open it. This feature allows the phone to stay open at any angle and can be propped up on any surface. The original Fold didn’t have this capability; it was either fully open and flat or snapped shut. Without a halfway point, leaving it half-closed made it flap around.
Cameras
Now, like a lump stacked on the throat, the camera is one component you find hard to swallow, especially because Samsung showed us what they could do with cameras in the S24 Ultra. The expectation was that they would take the 200-megapixel main camera found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and put it into the Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, the only notable change is the new 12MP ultrawide sensor, designed to deliver better low-light performance and HDR photos. Nevertheless, it captures vibrant and sharp images indoors.
Main Camera
You still get a 50MP main wide camera and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. With the hybrid zoom, you can go up to 30x, and the quality is good enough to make out text on a book cover from across the room.
Selfie Camera
Even though it’s the same 4MP sensor as before, you’ll find that selfies from the under-display camera through the main screen capture good-looking portraits under good lighting conditions. However, you’ll prefer using the 10MP front cover camera. As with previous Z Fold phones, you can use the rear camera selfie mode to leverage the back cameras for snapping images.
Despite the few downsides, the cameras are of overall sound quality, and a Samsung representative explained that with AI processing and improved image signal processing, you don’t need a higher-resolution main camera sensor. Be that as it may, I still feel that having more megapixels to play with is better.
King of AI
With a combination of Galaxy AI features and Google Gemini on board, Samsung is becoming the king of AI foldables.
Interpreter App
On the plus side, the interpreter app makes it easy to have a conversation with someone who speaks another language. The interpreter utilizes both the main display and cover display simultaneously to make the translation experience more seamless.
During a demo, you’ll be impressed with how quickly the other speaker’s phrases are translated on the cover screen. There’s also a listening mode, which will be handy for lectures.
Samsung Notes app
You’ll likely be a fan of Sketch to Image, though you need an optional S Pen for it to work. You can draw a crude outline in the Samsung Notes app, press a button, and within a few seconds, you’ll have a captivating illustration you can share. It feels like cheating, for sure.
The Note Assist feature also helps you auto-format and auto-summarize your notes and transcribe your voice recordings. Regarding communication, your Samsung Keyboard can help you write better emails and social media posts, depending on the tone you’re going for.
The Portrait studio
The strangest Galaxy Z Fold 6 AI feature, hands down, is Portrait Studio, which can create portrait styles on the fly, like cartoons and watercolors.
Software
Your Galaxy Z Fold 6 runs on Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1 on top out of the box. Therefore, get ready to go on a cruise with features like magic compose and enhanced lock screen customization, which provides intelligent responses to your messages in different tones. Samsung promises a solid seven years of software upgrades, which is the same as the Galaxy S24 Ultra and other Samsung flagships.
Battery
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 arrives with the same 4,400 mAh battery unit as its predecessor. However, there’s plenty to be excited about! The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, combined with enhanced thermal management, works wonders, resulting in a significant boost in battery life compared to the Fold 5. In fact, the Fold 6 boasts an impressive 18% increase in battery performance, scoring 5 hours and 33 minutes of usage time, up from the Fold 5’s 4 hours and 41 minutes.
This improvement is evident across all three primary use cases: web browsing, video playback, and 3D gaming. These advancements align the Z Fold 6 with its competitor, the OnePlus Open, and even slightly ahead of another rival, the Google Pixel Fold, which scores 5 hours and 22 minutes.
Moreover, the charging speed remains at 25 watts. While not groundbreaking, it’s still reasonably practical, allowing you to go from 0% to 50% in about half an hour. Additionally, wireless charging is available, capped at 15 watts, offering more flexibility for users. Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers a better and more efficient experience, making it a strong contender in the foldable smartphone market.
Storage and Performance on the Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has options for internal memory: 256GB, 512GB, or even 1TB, paired with 12GB of RAM across all models. This impressive storage space makes your Fold 6 ready for high-end action. With 12GB of RAM, your phone will perform excellently, ensuring a snappy experience when switching between applications.
Up to 1TB of internal storage combined with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (4 nm) chip delivers powerful performance, even for the most intensive tasks. Whether you choose the 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB model, Samsung’s internal memory is impressive and well thought out.
If you download and use apps that consume a lot of memory, such as video editors or complex mobile games, your phone’s storage won’t limit you. You won’t experience the hitching and stuttering joint with lower memory devices thanks to the Fold 6’s generous internal memory.
Connectivity and Communication on Your Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is 5G network-enabled, supporting 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. With SA/NSA/Sub6/mmWave 5G band and HSPA, LTE-A (CA), and 5G network speed, you can upload and download large files quickly and easily compared to lesser network bands on other smartphones.
Audio and Multimedia Experience
For ease of communication, your Galaxy Fold 6 comes equipped with stereo speakers, delivering the high-quality audio output Samsung handsets are known for. While it lacks a 3.5mm jack port and FM Radio support for traditional wired headsets and radio lovers, you can use Bluetooth connectivity (5.3, A2DP, LE, aptX HD) to listen to music, play videos, or watch your favorite series hands-free.
Advanced Connectivity Features
The USB Type-C 3.2, OTG, and NFC capabilities are great for fast data transfer. Your internet connectivity will be excellent, thanks to the latest WLAN technology (Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e, tri-band, Wi-Fi Direct), which minimizes buffering and stabilizes the network for the best experience while browsing or live-streaming videos.
All in All
Samsung has made mostly the right moves with the Galaxy Z Fold 6. You’ll appreciate the thinner and lighter design, the (slightly) more expansive cover display, and the brighter 7.6-inch main screen. You’ll also appreciate the AI features onboard the Z Fold 6 for productivity and entertainment, even if some feel a bit gimmicky. The durability improvements are welcome additions.
You won’t like that Samsung has raised the price of the Z Fold 6. Honestly, though, for everything it comes with, I believe this is a good price. The only thing that should have been considered is adding the S pen to the phone’s price.
