    Oppo A78 4G

Oppo has been expanding its global A series lineup, but in Kenya, these releases are infrequent. Nevertheless, the brand has introduced its second A-series device in India this year. This release is the 4G variant of the initial Oppo A78 5G model, which made its debut in Kenya earlier this year.

    Display

The OPPO A78 sports a rectangular, boxy design and is constructed from polycarbonate material, making it quite reminiscent of the numerous similar-looking smartphones available in this segment. Notably, the device features a dual-speaker system for audio output and houses a USB Type-C port at its bottom. Additionally, it incorporates a fingerprint sensor on the right side, doubling as the power button. On the phone’s blue matte-finish exterior, two circular rings protrude, indicating the presence of a dual-camera setup. While the OPPO A78 is both lightweight and durably built, it lacks that wow factor in terms of design.

The device boasts a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The display is framed by relatively thick bezels, particularly noticeable at the bottom, and it accommodates a somewhat dated waterdrop notch to house the selfie camera. Considering the remarkable strides made by budget-friendly phones in enhancing their display quality, it’s somewhat disappointing to encounter a lower-resolution screen on the A78. The display does compensate with its brightness and reasonable viewing angles. Moreover, the 90Hz refresh rate ensures smooth navigation through the phone’s interface. Nonetheless, there exist other smartphones priced under Ksh 33,500 that offer superior viewing experiences compared to the OPPO A78.

    Camera

The device incorporates a dual-camera setup, consisting of a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera sensor and a 2MP bokeh lens. Additionally, the device boasts an 8MP f/2.0 front-facing camera sensor. Images captured with the primary sensor yield decent results. While the dynamic range is average, the level of detail and sharpness appears satisfactory. The overall color tone of the photos leans toward a warm palette but remains acceptable. Portrait shots, however, can be inconsistent. Edge detection often falls short of expectations, despite the camera having access to information from the 2MP bokeh sensor. Exposure levels also exhibit variability, though the level of detailing remains commendable.

In low-light conditions, the camera’s performance is notably subpar, with significant noise resulting in grainy images. Even shots taken under artificial lighting suffer from inconsistent exposure, occasionally appearing overly bright. This inconsistency impacts the overall color accuracy negatively. Selfies, unfortunately, don’t fare well with this handset. Images tend to exhibit noticeable noise, and the overall outcome tends to be on the softer side. Night shots share a similar outcome, with the Night mode offering limited improvement.

    Performance

For its processing needs, OPPO has incorporated the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC into the A78. Although this chipset is relatively older, it adequately handles routine tasks. Tasks such as switching between the Chrome browser and various social media apps or leisurely browsing through YouTube won’t strain the CPU. However, for gaming enthusiasts, other manufacturers may offer a more satisfying experience. Additionally, the A78 offers up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.

Regarding other features, the dual-speaker system on the device provides decent sound quality and depth to the audio. The side-mounted fingerprint sensor is notable for its quick and effortless authentication. The A78 supports 5G connectivity with compatibility for at least six bands, including the popular n78. In terms of software, the OPPO A78 runs on ColorOS 13, based on Android 13, which offers a more polished experience compared to other Chinese OEM skins. Nevertheless, the device still suffers from the presence of pre-installed apps, a common issue with such devices.

The A78 boasts a 5,000mAh battery, supported by a 33W charging solution. For everyday use, the OPPO A78 can easily last a day, and even two days with light usage. Charging from 0 to 100 percent takes approximately 90 minutes.

    Alternatives

    Samsung Galaxy A24

The Oppo A78 and Samsung Galaxy A24 4G are strong competitors, offering diverse features. The Samsung Galaxy A24 4G features a 6.5-inch display, efficient MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, and advanced triple-camera setup. Its 5,000 mAh battery ensures extended usage. It’s an attractive alternative to the Oppo A78, delivering display brilliance, smooth performance, versatile photography, and long-lasting power. Explore and enjoy life’s moments with this companion!

    Conclusion

While the OPPO A78 may not stand out prominently among its competitors in the budget-friendly phone market, it does offer an overall experience that should appeal to users in this price range. This includes a commendable build quality, capable performance to handle everyday tasks, and a reasonable battery life. Check out more Oppo smartphones on our website.
