When you first look at the Google Pixel Buds Series-A, they don’t seem much different from their predecessors. These fully wireless earbuds maintain a futuristic look with a sleek design. The charging case is smooth, with an egg-like shape that fits comfortably in your hand or pocket. The earbuds are pretty small and secure in your ears, with a small nub resting in the outer ear. How well this nub fits will depend on your ear shape, but adding a new stabilizer fin does help it stay in place.

One new feature is the vent in the earbuds, designed to reduce pressure build-up inside the ear. It’s a slight adjustment but can make a noticeable difference if you’re sensitive to pressure. Controlling the earbuds is straightforward. Tap once to play or pause music, twice to skip to the next track, and three times to go back. Pressing and holding will activate Google Assistant if you’re using an Android device. Unfortunately, you can’t adjust the volume with touch controls on the Pixel Buds Series-A, but Google Assistant can help.

Performance

The A-Series retains most of the features in the Google Pixel Buds 2, including hands-free Google Assistant, real-time translation, and an IPX4 rating that makes them resistant to sweat and splashes. We initially thought the performance would be similar since the earbuds’ design hasn’t changed much. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The new tuning in the Google Pixel Buds Series-A significantly improves the bass response, marking a noticeable enhancement in sound quality over the Pixel Buds 2.

The bass stands out when listening to various music genres. Although the mids and highs are not as prominent, the improved low-end is a clear upgrade from the previous model. The earbuds offer a surprisingly wide soundstage, providing a fuller experience for many songs. The sound quality has improved significantly, but there’s still room for enhancement. Listening for extended periods can be tiring, so we preferred shorter sessions. The Series-A Buds are a noticeable improvement over the Google Pixel Buds 2.

While these earbuds don’t offer active noise cancellation, they have a clever feature that adjusts the volume based on the ambient noise level. For example, if you’re on a noisy bus, the earbuds automatically increase the volume of your music. This feature doesn’t block out noise entirely but saves you from constantly adjusting the volume as you move between different environments.

Battery Life

Battery life is another area where the Google Pixel Buds A-Series shows improvement. Google claims up to five hours of listening time and two-and-a-half hours of talk time, compared to the three hours of listening time we experienced with the Pixel Buds 2. We’ll need to test them more to confirm these promising numbers. The charging case adds another 19 hours of battery life, bringing the total to 24 hours. The earbuds also support fast charging, with 15 minutes in the case, providing up to three hours of listening time.
