    Introduction

True to their reputation, Xiaomi has once again come up on top with a true budget phone, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, balancing out basic specifications with good pricing, making sure they had it right where it counts. The specifications include a quad camera, fast charging, and a big battery. Beginning May 2020, Redmi 9 will be in Kenya. What makes this budget phone tick? Let’s find out in our review.

    Design

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes with a 6.53 inch IPS LCD capacitive screen, with left aligned punch-out camera, helping achieve a modest 83.5% screen to body ratio. Except for a small chin at the bottom, the screen achieves very minimal bezels. It comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection with 395 PPI density. See also Tecno Phantom 10

The front glass blends into the hardened plastic frame which blends into the plastic back. In the middle of the back, is the quad-camera bump. At the bottom are a downward-firing speaker, a USB-C charging port, and a welcome 3.5 mm headphone jack. The screen is advertised to be splash-proof and said to achieve 450 nits of brightness. Performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes with a Mediatek Helio G85 SoC, supported by the octa-core Cortex A75/A55 combo CPU, which ramps up to 2.0 GHz, and the Mali G52 MC2 GPU. The memory configuration comes with a 3/4 GB RAM and 64/128 GB combination. It also has a dedicated micro SD slot enabling internal memory expansion to up to 256 GB. This is enough processing power for the average user and at the budget price its offered with, true budget value. It handles ordinary tasks with ease but not very ideal for heavier tasks like gaming.

    Camera

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes with a quad-camera configuration, with the primary camera being a 48 mp wide lens, supported by an 8 mp ultra-wide, a 2 mp macro, and a 2 mp depth sensor. The photos are very good, especially in optimal lighting. The ultra-wide comes in clutch for those landscape photos and the portrait mode is very capable. You may also like Redmi Note 9 Pro. It can record 1080p video at 30fps. The front-facing camera is a 13 mp wide sensor, HDR supported, shooting 1080p video at 30fps. The pictures are quite usable and a steal at this particular price point.

    Battery

The crown of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 jewel is most definitely the battery. It has a 5020 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery, more than enough for single-day use, even for a power user. It comes capable of up to 18W fast charging and reverse charging of 9W. The battery takes about 1.5 hours to fill up -since it’s pretty big, which is expected and accepted – see Oppo A12s.

    Software

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes with Android 10 straight of the box with MIUI 11 custom skin on top. The experience is smooth and fluid, owing to a recent MIUI redesign which makes it lighter and modern looking. Some bloatware might be visible but you may find some of the preinstalled apps quite helpful. It most certainly doesn’t feel slow nor is lag conspicuously visible.

    Final remarks

Compared to the competition, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is a great value gadget, offering an experience largely associated with higher-priced devices. Despite the plastic build, it doesn’t feel cheap and is comfortable to hold. It comes with wireless radio and NFC capabilities. It has a standby nano-sim and Bluetooth 4.2. This one is truly a value king. Check out this product’s official website to learn more.
