In a very competitive budget phone segment, Xiaomi has come into the fray with another great hit, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, a favorably priced budget midranger, with a great viewing acreage, a quad camera set up and a great midrange chipset. Let’s dive in:
Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Screen and design
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 has an IPS LCD full HD+ 6.3-inch screen, with a teardrop camera housing that brings the screen to body ratio to 81.7%. it has Corning Gorilla Glass protection, both front and back, sandwiching a metal frame. The bezels are not conspicuous, except for a small chin at the bottom of the screen. It surprisingly has a LED notification just left of the teardrop notch which is very commendable. At the bottom sits the USB-C charging port, a downward firing speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Out back, the vertical left aligned camera bump is hard to miss. At the center lies the fingerprint sensor and at the bottom some lettering.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with the snapdragon 665 midrange chipset, a 2GHz octacore Kyro 260 CPU paired with Adreno 610 GPU. Its comes in 3/32GB, 4/64GB, 6/64GB, 4/128GB, 6/128GB memory options. Being a midrange chipset, the phone works just fine on average day today use.it might drop a frame or two during intense use but it’s hardly noticeable. It has a dedicated microSD memory slot so one can expand the memory up to 512GB. It’s also a great chipset to pair the 48mp primary camera with.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 has a quad camera setup. The primary camera is a 48mp 26mm wide lens, an 8mp 13mm ultra wide sensor, a 2mp macro lens and a 2mp depth sensor. Being an entry level phone, the setup is impressive. The camera can record 4k video at 30fps, 2160p at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120 fps with gyro electronic image stabilization. The front facing camera is a 13mp wide lens, capable of shooting HD video at 30fps with picture modes for HDR and panorama. The photos should be colorful, sharp and well pixelated. The back cameras also support continuous shooting and HDR modes.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with a non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh, paired with USB-C, capable of 18W fast charging. The fast charging brick comes included in the box. The phone easily lasts all day long, even with heavy use. The phone charges to 100% in 2 hours, fairly fast and decent. The endurance rating stands at 108 hours.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with Android 9 Pie straight out of the box, with the MIUI 11 skin slapped on top. The bloatware has visibly reduced over the years so it won’t be hard to adjust, even for a new Xiaomi user. The experience is fast and fluid, with update support fairly strong. Security wise, the Note 8 supports face unlock, over and above the fingerprint scanner. You might also find useful apps added in, including MI Share and Digital Wellbeing.
Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is a great deal. It comes in Neptune Blue, Moonlight White, Space Black, Nebula Purple and Cosmic Blue. There is no IP rating for dust or water resistance though its advertised as splash proof. It’s no surprise it doesn’t support NFC or wireless charging, but the IR blaster sensor comes in handy, especially in use as a remote. The Global version is certified L1 for streaming content in HD in popular content streaming sites like YouTube and Netflix.it supports nano-sim and Bluetooth 4.2
