Tecno Pova 5 Review
Tecno is expanding its global smartphone portfolio, including Kenya. Their aim has always been to introduce powerful devices at an accessible price; and now Tecno has finally introduced the Pova 5G as part of an OEM lineup. Tecno Pova 5G, Kenya’s inaugural 5G device, is its flagship offering for Kenyan consumers. Equipped with mid-tier hardware at an accessible price point, the Pova 5G can be yours today for only Ksh 30500!
Realme, Poco, Oppo and Xiaomi all offer 5G smartphones which pose direct competition for Tecno’s 5G phone in Kenya. Infinix recently unveiled their Zero 5G handset as well. You may be asking what sets Tecno apart from them all and whether the Pova 5G warrants consideration over other similar handsets available in Kenya; we had some time playing around with this phone ourselves and documented our experiences here.
Tecno Pova 5G Design
The Pova 5G features a large body with a tall design; however, Tecno has made some improvements and reduced bulk in terms of the body bulk. Furthermore, it boasts a slimmer profile than many of Tecno’s midrange phones; we would have preferred an even slimmer and lighter profile though.
The Pova 5G boasts a shimmering back, featuring both plain and textured skin textures. On its left-hand side is a large vertical camera module which protrudes slightly. Without protective covers or cases in place, however, its rear panel becomes difficult to keep clean due to fingerprints and dust accumulation; its retail box provides one clear case to keep your device protected and clean.
As this device can be slippery, a case is necessary in order to keep it from slipping out of your hand. All other design features of this Tecno midrange phone remain the same: power key and volume keys can be found on its side panel along with a fingerprint reader that quickly and accurately reads fingerprints, making unlocking it an enjoyable experience.
Tecno has created an attractive phone with this device; its SIM card slot can accommodate two SIMs as well as microSD memory at the same time. On its left side is a 3-way SIM slot which enables dual SIM use alongside microSD support; its USB Type-C connector is on its bottom panel, nestled between its 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker grille; however, its weighty design and slippery surface could have made this more functional than it currently is.
Tecno Pova Display: Ideal for HD Video Capturing
Tecno Pova 5G’s massive size can be attributed to its 6.9-inch display. Tecno has chosen an IPS panel, upgraded the specs and implemented several software tweaks for optimal output, making this smartphone one of the largest affordable 5G phones you will find today.
Although not as impressive in terms of video playback and gaming as an OLED or AMOLED panel, FHD+ displays still make for a fantastic viewing experience. YouTube allows for seamless 1080p streaming, and you won’t be dissatisfied with color reproduction!
AMOLED screens may not deliver as deep blacks as expected, which may decrease the viewing experience while watching dark TV shows. Another aspect that would have enhanced it further would have been HDR10+ certification; however, the Tecno Pova 5G display supports a 120Hz rate of refresh for better gaming and smoother experience.
The Pova 5G’s display brightness is average. While visibility may be an issue in direct sunlight, its large form factor, FHD+ resolution screen and 120Hz refresh ensure the Pova 5G stands out thanks to its large form factor and 120Hz refresh.
Tecno Pova 5G: Camera Review
Camera hardware is one of the key determinants of a smartphone’s appeal to the public, and Tecno has targeted budget-minded consumers by offering quality imaging experiences on many of its smartphones. One such example of this is Pova 5G camera phone, featuring three rear-facing cameras on its back – a 50MP sensor as main one and 2MP micro-sensor coupled with AI lens to complete its performance – including two micro-lenses for depth sensing capabilities and AI enhancement. Overall performance was satisfactory.
With its large 50MP sensor, the main camera of the Pova 5G can capture incredible detail in every photograph taken. By default, its 12MP rear cameras take 12MP shots that can further be enhanced through EIS (electronic stabilization), HDR, AI Cam, AR Shot or Bokeh photos taken using hardware-based Bokeh. Furthermore, the color reproduction may appear slightly saturated.
This task is made simpler by an additional sensor. When taken against a well-lit background, portraits will look more natural; blurs won’t seem unnatural in these instances. Capturing images in broad daylight also yields superior quality results: cleaner edges and lower background noise are captured more reliably than low-light photos are affected by it.
Even though this camera app features a Super Night mode, its output isn’t very refined when taking pictures in low light conditions. Video recording remains stable due to stabilization; you can record 4K Time-Lapse and 960@fps Slow-Motion videos too! Furthermore, Pova 5G boasts 16MP front-facing camera which allows video calls as well as selfies in HD quality that can be shared easily across social media networks.
Tecno Pova Performance: No Lag with General Tasks
Tecno’s Pova 5G chipset is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 5G series chipset. We were delighted to discover that they use Tecno’s Dimensity 900 chip with 6nm octa cores; similar processors can be found in Infinix Zero 5G and OnePlus Nord CE 2 (5G). Tecno’s inaugural 5G phone offers impressive power for general tasks such as web browsing or media playback, without being compromised by intensive processing tasks such as gaming.
The Pova 5G offers outstanding multitasking abilities. With 8GB RAM capacity and smooth switching between apps running in the background without delay or hesitation. Gaming performance also rivals those of its rivals. The Pova 5G comes equipped with 128GB of internal memory. If that storage doesn’t meet your needs, feel free to expand it with external microSD up to 513GB if necessary; otherwise, it provides ample capacity for daily use. Tecno has installed Android 11 OS on its first 5G Smartphone, as well as HiOS 8.0’s user interface. While its hardware performance may be among its main drawbacks, its cluttered UI may put off some potential customers.
Battery Backup for Tecno Pova 5.
Powered by an impressive 6,000mAh lithium-ion battery, the Tecno 5G boasts an enormous weight. However, the massive battery can still power the unit for over one full day with just one charge. Even when performing rigorous tasks, this battery offers steady performance without needing to be recharged every few hours. Furthermore, fast charging at 18W supports faster refueling of your batteries.
Tecno Pova: Final Verdict
The Tecno Pova 5G is an exciting new smartphone competitor in Kenya’s smartphone race. As an affordable midrange phone with support for 5G networks, the Pova 5G should make for an excellent daily driver with modern features – and could become your new midrange option with 5G support!
