Design and display
The Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with a 6.53 inch IPS LCD FHD+ screen with an uninterrupted front Full View display because it carries the motorized pop-up camera. The bezels are nice and narrow with a small chin at the bottom. The screen offers great viewing angles which are great for content consumption and day to day usage. You may also like Camon 15 Air.
The build is plastic, but it has a premium feel due to the shimmering design on the poly-carbonate that has become popular with other OEMs too. That might also make it a fingerprint magnet but it comes with a complimentary case. Speaking of fingerprints, it has a rear-mounted scanner beside the newly redesigned quad-camera bump that also houses the pop-up camera. At the bottom, we get the 3.5 mm jack but still no USB-C.
Performance and storage
The Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with the mid-range Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 processor, with a 2.35 GHz Cortex A53 and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It is backed by a generous 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal mass storage, with an option for expandable micro SDXC memory of up to 256 GB. It might not be more powerful among mid-ranges, but it delivers decent performance. There is little or no noticeable lag when opening apps or multitasking, but expect it to work with lower graphics settings when dealing with intensive games.
Camera
The Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with an upgraded quad camera set up featuring the big 48 mp wide primary camera, a 5 mp ultra-wide for those landscape or group photos, a 2 mp macro sensor for those really close up shots, and a QVGA low light shooter for premiered night mode. The photos are well detailed, colors decently balanced, and light not overexposed. Edge detection in portrait photos is well handled with passable bokeh. The macro shots are well detailed with fast auto-focus and true to life color reproduction.
The video is equally great, hammering 1080p footage in 30fps. The selfie camera is an automated motorized pop-up module that carries the 32 mp sensor. The normal or portrait pictures are great, but it loses out with the night shot which, despite increasing exposure, seems to lose pretty much all detail, ending up with a beauty like smoothed out-shot. It can still shoot a passable 1080p video at 30fps – see Infinix S5 Lite.
Battery
The Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with a dependable industry-standard 4000 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery that easily lasts throughout the day even for the power user. What’s disappointing is the continued refusal by Tecno to adopt USB Type C and offer real fast charging, at a time when this particular technology has been adopted by most of the competition. That means we still retain 10W standard charging which takes over 2 hours to fill up. You may like Infinix Hot 9 Play.
Software
The Tecno Camon 15 Premier comes with the most updated Tecno UI, the HIOS 6.0.1, based on Android 10. It comes with the goodies offered by the new Android release but sadly, true to their nature, lots and lots of bloatware. This has been a glaring irritant for a while, with the preinstalled or unnecessary apps and their system-wide ad service. And despite adding options to turn off or uninstall some of these services, it feels a little unnecessary at a time when most OEMs are offering cleaner UIs. The UI might be highly customizable and intuitive, but the hot and cold premiership is a little confusing.
Final remarks
Overall, the Tecno Camon 15 Premier is one of the best offerings from the Camon camera-centric stable. It brings the four sensor treatment solidly into budget territory with great ergonomic design. The software experience, however, is still a glaring thorn in the flesh of its users. This is over and above the fact, this particular segment is very competitive.
