Hot the heels of the Samsung Galaxy A50 that was a global run-away success, Samsung pushed out the Samsung Galaxy A50s in August 2019, having tweaked some of the specifications to try to replicate, and surpass, its predecessor’s appeal. They certainly got most of it right. Let’s take a closer look.

Screen and design of the Samsung Galaxy A50s

The Samsung Galaxy A50s comes with a 6.4 inch super AMOLED touchscreen with an Infinity U design to accommodate the front-facing camera. It achieves a screen to body ratio of 85.1%, with a 403 PPI density, clocking the top screen brightness at 400 nits. The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected front panel blends into the plastic frame which seamlessly forms the plastic back. The back host the triple camera set up aligned to the top left, with the conspicuous lack of a fingerprint scanner since it uses the under-display optical fingerprint scanner, in addition to the face unlocking biometrics. The phone weighs in at 169g and is 7.7mm thick.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy A50s comes with a Samsung’s in house mid-range Exynos 9611 10nm chipset, paired with an octa-core up to 2.3GHz Cortex A73/A53 CPU combo and the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. It comes with memory configurations of 4/6GB RAM and an internal choice of 64/128GB, with UFS 2.1 mass storage. It has a dedicated microSDXC memory card slot capable of upping memory by an extra 512GB. The performance is top tier, no visible lag, and a capable handset when it comes to heavier tasks like graphics-heavy gaming.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A50s comes with a triple camera set up configuration, with a primary shooter of 48mp 26mm wide-angle lens, coupled with an 8mp 13mm ultra-wide lens and a 5mp depth sensor. The photos are great, sharp and rich in colour. The edge image detection in the portrait mode is great, and the distancing variance in bokeh is more than decent. It doesn’t struggle with low or overexposed lighting conditions, with a whole range of modes to ensure this, including an inbuilt night mode. The cameras can shoot 4k video at 30fps, 2160p at 30fps and full HD at 30/60fps. The cameras support HDR and panorama too. Upfront, the selfie camera is a 32mp 25mm shooter, capable of HDR and shoots 1080p video at 30fps. The selfies are awesome, being one of the better midrange cameras in this segment.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A50s comes with a non-removable Li-Po 4000mAh battery. This is pretty much post 2019 battery benchmark and it doesn’t disappoint. It is sufficient not only for the average user with a considerable juice left to spare by the end of the day, but also for the power user, often enough to get you back home. If that doesn’t suffice, the phone comes 15W fast charging capable, with the brick and capable included in the box. This charges in a little over 2 hours, with an endurance rate of 102 hours.

Software

Straight out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy A50s comes with Android 9 Pie, with Samsung’s One UI custom skin. It is upgradable to Android 10.0 with One UI 2 skin. The experience is fluid and snappy, augmented by the great chipset and the beautiful looking AMOLED display. Also, the Samsung ecosystem comes with a bunch of new apps that improve the experience, quite unique from the offerings of other manufacturers or even custom Android, so it’s nice just to check it out. The security biometrics supported include FaceID face unlock and the under-display fingerprint scanner.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s is truly an improved version of its predecessor, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. It comes with dual standby nano sim and NFC support. There are no official IP ratings for dust and water, but it is advertised as splash-proof, with additional Bluetooth 5.0. it comes in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Green and, Prism Crush Violet.
