Samsung has had a long-standing reputation for being at the forefront of innovation and quality for a very long time. But there hasn’t been a midrange that has had more impact on its segment like the Samsung Galaxy A50, released in March 2019. The Samsung Galaxy A50 set the bar that would inform most of the phones in the Galaxy A series lineup and its variants. Let’s take a closer look

Screen and design of the Samsung Galaxy A50

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a 6.4inch super AMOLED capacitive screen, with an Infinity U teardrop notch design to house the front-facing camera. The 1080p screen has a PPI density of 403, with a screen to body ratio of 84.9%. The front glass has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, which blends into the hardened plastic frame and all the way to the back plastic. Outback, it has the vertically aligned triple camera set up, but no physical fingerprint scanner, as it employs the onscreen under-display fingerprint scanner, in addition to face unlock biometrics. At the bottom, we have a downward-firing speaker, a USB-C connector and a 3.5mm headphone jack.  The phone weighs in at 166g and is 7.7mm thick.

Performance and storage

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with Samsung’s in-house Exynos 9610 10nm chipset, paired with the up to 2.3GHz Cortex A73/A53 CPU combo and the Mali G72 MP3 GPU. The memory configuration options onboard include 4/6GB for RAM and 64/128GB for ROM, supported by UFS 2.1 flash mass storage, in addition to a dedicated MicroSDXC slot, capable of an extra 512GB. All things considered, the phone is a workhorse. Smooth fast and well balanced, the Samsung Galaxy A50 certainly sets the standard that every other midrange has come to emulate. It handles every task with impressive speed and doesn’t overly struggle with frames when it comes to intensive tasks like gaming. Multitasking, split-screen and pinning apps to the screen is all possible, thanks to the smart RAM management employed here.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple camera set up, starting off with a 25mp 26mm wide camera, an 8mp 13mm ultra-wide lens, and a 5mp depth sensor. The photos are clean, well pixelated and rich in color. The portrait mode, christened live focus, is very decent in terms of edge detection. The bokeh distance variance is very convincing. Despite not having night mode in the initial release, the overexposure it suffers in bright environments works in its favour, allowing more light in low light conditions, hence better night shots. This is also improved by the fact that a dedicated Night Mode has been added in a subsequent camera software update. The cameras can shoot 4K video in 30fps, 2k in 30fps and Full HD in 30/60/120fps, while supporting HDR and Panorama. On the selfie front, we have a single 25mp 25mm wide angle shooter, capable of HDR and Full HD video at 30fps. The photos are great, with 2x zoom and portrait modes.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with the very capable 4000mAh non removable Li-Po battery, capable of easily lasting a day with charge left over, be it for the average user or for the power user, often with long hours of mixed use, including social media, music, gaming and so forth. On top of that, it comes with 15W fast charging with brick and cable straight out of the box. This is capable of easily filling the phone in about 2 hours. Add intelligent battery management from the One UI and the battery doesn’t struggle at all to last the whole day. As it were with a plastic back, the Samsung Galaxy A50 does not come with wireless charging, which is no surprise at all. The battery endurance stands at 98 hours.

Software

Straight out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with Android 9 Pie, with One UI 2, which is upgradable to Android 10.0. It’s interesting to note that the One UI has greatly improved over the years, with a more modern design and lighter feel. The bloatware is hardly noticeable but the additional features it brings on board are largely productive so it easy to recommend. It feels fast and fluid, with easy multitasking and smart RAM allocation for intensive tasks like gaming.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 is a revolutionary device whichever way you look at it. Most of the midrange devices that came later on are designed off its architecture. It offers  important features while still delivering value for money. It supports NFC, dual standby nano SIM and Bluetooth 5.it has no IP rating for dust or water proofing but its splash proof nonetheless. It comes in Blue, White, Blue and Coral.
