Introduction

On the back of many of its successful releases, Oppo has continued to rally up a newfound position as a formidable force among the midranges. Among the devices announced is the Oppo A92, available from February 2020. Its specifications include an SD 665, a huge 5000mAh battery, a great 6.5-inch screen, and nice quad cameras. But does it have what it takes to stand up to the competition? The expected price in Kenya is Ksh 28,000. Here’s a take at a review.

Design

The Oppo A92 comes with the 6.5 inch IPS LCD touchscreen with the left aligned to punch out design to accommodate the front-facing camera module. The glass front blends into the plastic frame and onward to the plastic back. The back hosts the quad-camera set up, aligned to the top left corner and a side-mounted fingerprint.

In addition to the FaceID security biometrics face unlocking feature. The screens PPI density is 450 with the brightness maxing out at 480 nits. At the bottom of the phone lies a downward-firing stereo speaker, the micro-USB charging port and the 3.5 mm headphone jack – see also Oppo Reno 3.

Performance

The Oppo A92 comes with the Snapdragon 665. The same is flanked by an octa-core 2.0 GHz Kyro 260 CPU and an Adreno 610 GPU. The memory configuration choices are a generous 8 GB for RAM and 128 GB for ROM. There is a dedicated micro SDXC card slot capable of expanding the memory by an extra 1T. This performance is solidly in the mid-range performance, powerful enough to take on intensive tasks such as games with ease. The experience is fast and snappy, with almost no lag expected.

Camera

Oppo A92 comes with a very good camera configuration. Its primary sensor is a 48 mp wide lens, an 8 mp ultra-wide, supported by a 2 mp depth shooter and a 2 mp light sensor. The photos should be great, with more sharpness in detail and better light control. This because it is powered by a powerful chipset.

The portrait and bokeh capabilities are usable with edge detection and distance variance being well executed. It shoots up to 4k video at 30fps, with support for HDR and gyro EIS, helping deliver Go-Pro like stable footage. The front-facing single shooter is a 16 mp sensor. Albeit average, it is still very formidable, making cool, clear, and well-balanced shots, with full HD video coming in at 30fps.

Battery

The Oppo A92 comes with a huge non-removable Li-Po 5000 mAh battery. This has been seen to be very capable to last more than a day even for the power user.. We also have 18W fast charging to help fill the huge battery, hitting 50% in about 45 mins. Ideally, this means the battery makes this phone great for content consumption, photography, and mild gaming. You may also like Oppo A52.

Software

From the box, the Oppo A92 comes with Android 10 with Oppo’s custom ColorOS 7.1 UI slapped on top. The ColorOS UI is different and improved, faster, and lighter, with a more modern feel to it. The ColorOS ecosystem is also a joy to use, packing in some useful apps. These heighten an improved experience, without necessarily overwhelming it with unnecessary bloatware. It is truly worth checking out.

Final remarks

Overall, the Oppo A92 is a great mid-range with a great price. It serves the needs of pretty much any kind of mid-range user without any significant sacrifices. It has a great screen, a great quad-camera outlay, and an immense battery. The ColorOS is also well designed and intuitive, with a few bells and whistles. Overall, it should offer great value for the buck among other mid-ranges.
