Introduction

The mid-range stable at has been roaring all year long with loads and loads of new devices, probably a little overzealous even. It is extremely competitive and the differentiation is ever more narrow. The Oppo A52 is another addition to the fray, bringing in another take to the otherwise congested mid-range segment. The specifications include an SD 665, a huge 5000 mAh battery, a quad camera, and fast charging. The expected price in Kenya is Ksh 24,000. Let’s take a look at the review. See also Oppo A92.

Display

The Oppo A52 comes with a 6.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive screen, with the Infinity-O (also Galaxy A21s) punch-out camera design, aligned to the top left corner. The relatively bezel-less screen has an 83.4% screen to body ratio and a PPI density of 405. It has corning gorilla glass 3 protection which blends into the plastic frame to the back. We have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a quad-camera set up. At the bottom, we have a stereo speaker grill, a USB-C connector, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack

Performance

The Oppo A52 comes with the repeatedly tested and proven capable Snapdragon 665 chipset, shouldering an Octa-core Kyro 260 CPU, a quad-core 2.0 GHz Gold, and a quad-core 1.8 GHz Silver, and an Adreno 610 GPU. The internal memory configuration is a 4/6/8 GB for the RAM and 64/128 GB ROM, with a hybrid micro SDXC card slot, capable of expanding the internal memory by an extra 512 GB. It’s in a performance that this device shines, for there is absolutely nothing that doesn’t feel like a breeze on this SoC.

Camera

Now Oppo A52 comes with a quad-camera configuration, starting with a primary 12 mp wide-angle lens, an 8 mp ultra-wide lens, a 2 mp macro, and a 2 mp depth sensor. The photos are average, clear, detailed, and rich in color, especially in good lighting conditions. It however struggles when overexposed or in low light conditions. It loses some detail and becomes a little grainy – see Oppo Reno Z.

The bokeh and portrait modes are pretty decent but certainly, nothing award-winning. It can shoot 4k video at 30fps and Full HD at 120fps with gyro assisted EIS. Upfront, it has a decent 16 mp wide selfie camera, with HDR support and shoots 1080p at 30fps. The photos are usable and decent, especially in optimal lighting conditions.

Battery

Oppo A52 comes with a huge battery, a 5000 mAh non-removable Li-Po, which easily lasts 2 days, even for a power user. On top of that, we also get 18W fast charging, capable of filling up 50% in less than an hour. That means the device is great for continuous use without worrying about whether it will run out of juice. You may also like Oppo A31.

Software

Straight out of the box, the Oppo A52 comes with Android 10.0 with ColorOS 7.1 custom skin. Bundled with the powerful SoC, reduced bloatware, and a redesigned UI, the OS runs like a breeze. The multitasking is great, with faster app loading and RAM management. You might get a few pre-loaded apps with the UI but its thankfully nothing you can’t delete.

The ColorOS UI is interesting and intuitive for first-time users, while still delivering a couple whistles and bells for long time users. The experience isn’t that far off from stock android, so it’s worth checking out the UI ecosystem.

Final remarks

The Oppo A52 is a mixed bag of tricks. Loads of memory, a huge battery, a great camera set up, and a powerful mid-range chip. It is great for continuous use without feeling like it compromises on its core strengths. It might face a lot of stiff competition at this price point but there is some value proposition in there for the target user.
