Nokia G400 5G

The Nokia G400 is a new budget phone, with a great value proposition. It packs a very fast snapdragon 480 5G chipset, a huge 6.58-inch 120Hz IPS LCD screen, a generous 48MP primary camera, a huge 5000 mAh battery, 20W fast charging, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The 5G modem makes this one of the few entry-level phones to support it.

Design

The Nokia G400 comes with a 6.58-inch 120Hz IPS LCD screen with a dew drop design for the selfie camera. It has a screen-to-body ratio of 81.7% and is quite bright and vivid, peaking at 450 nits with an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10+ which makes it an absolute delight to consume media with. It has an aluminum frame, a plastic back, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 front panel. This certainly adds a premium feel, considering the chip is entry-level. It comes with a radio and, fortunately, a headphone jack. It has a physical fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed on the rear, for easier access. It has a downward-firing speaker, which is great for playing media.

Performance

The Nokia G400 comes with the entry-level budget 480+ 5G chipset, making it quite fast and decent for gaming. It has a Kyro Octa-core 2.2GHz CPU paired with an Adreno 619 GPU, with storage options of 4GB for RAM & 64GB for ROM. It also comes with a dedicated expandable memory option, which is a plus. Running the latest stock Android 12, the performance feels very fast and premium. No lags or slow transitions on this one. Everything feels fast, fluid and rich in colour. This also makes it one of the few entry-level devices with a 5G modem.

Cameras

The Nokia G400 has a triple camera arrangement on the back. It comes with a decent 48MP wide primary sensor, for those excellent daylight photos, with the classic 12MP picture binning. There is an extra 2MP depth sensor to add a bokeh or portrait effect on the photos and a 5MP ultra-wide lens to add perspective to landscape and group photos. The video can support 1080p video at 30 fps, with HDR support & gyro-EIS stability assistance. The selfie camera is a generous 16MP wide sensor, capable of 1080p video at 30fps. The selfies are great and well-lit.

Other features

The Nokia G400 comes with decent 20W fast charging with Power Delivery 3.0, which can get the phone fully charged in about an hour. That’s fairly usable. That is in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 5000mAh non-removable battery, which is rather generous. Even with a power user and the high refresh rate screen, this should be more than enough to last more than a day. Of course, there is no wireless charging here. It supports NFC for contactless paying. It comes in Meteor Grey.

Similarly, priced phones would include Tecno Pova Neo, Nokia G21, the Oppo A16K and Realme C25Y. The main distinction at this price point is often a choice of a better camera or more memory. The sizes are usually standard and the batteries are often huge. It’s unlikely there are wireless charging options as the price is too competitive.

The design is great, in addition to the many cameras and 120Hz high refresh rate screen. The OS is stock android, which offers the least bloatware of all android skins. The 5G chipset in an entry-level device and a premium aluminum frame is certainly the icing on the cake.
