Prefatory

Reminiscent of the years gone by at Nokia, we are once again wowed by a new device, fresh, beautiful, and well balanced. Nokia has been known to be excellent in photography, largely because of the Zeiss lens, and with the revival and comeback underway, we are excited about this particular device. Let’s have a peep.

Display and design

The Nokia 8.3 5G comes with the 6.81 inch IPS LCD capacitive screen, with cut out design aligned to the left to accommodate the front-facing camera, which has been celebrated as less intrusive on the screen acreage. The bezels are certainly minimized except for a small chin at the bottom of the screen that has the logo lettering. The narrow 1080p screen gets the unusual 20:9 aspect ratio, a screen to body ratio of 82.9%, and a PPI density of 386.

The glass front is Corning Gorilla 3 protected, with a middle plastic frame and a hardened plastic back. It has a quad-camera setup at the back center. The fingerprint scanner on the other hand is the side-mounted scanner on top of facial recognition biometrics. The bottom has the downward-firing speaker, a USB-C connector, and gladly a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Performance and storage

The Nokia 8.3 5G comes with the powerful midrange Snapdragon 765G chipset, coupled with an octa-core 2.4GHz Kyro 475 CPU, in addition to an Adreno 620 GPU. The internal memory configurations are 4/6GB for RAM and 64/128GB for ROM, with a dedicated microSDXC to expand the memory. The configuration is stuck in top midrange SoC territory, making it fast and a very formidable combination. It should have it easy on day to day use but it certainly holds up to graphics-intensive games and whatnot.

Camera

The Nokia 8.3 5G has a quad Zeiss optics camera set up, starting with an impressive 64mp wide-angle lens, a 13mp ultra-wide shooter, a 2mp macro, and a 2mp depth sensor. The photos are great. The primary shooter delivers well pixelated, rich, and sharp images, well balanced in light and very detailed. See also Nokia 8.1 smartphone.

The depth sensor delivers the portrait and bokeh effects, with great edge detection and distance variance. The low light photos are pretty decent, giving off a well-exposed Night Mode with little noise. It can shoot up to 4K video at 30fps, with gyro assisted image stabilization. The selfie camera is no slouch either at 24mp, with HDR, and recording HD video at 30fps. The selfies are sharp, detailed, and vivid.

Battery

The Nokia 8.3 5G comes with the big 4500 mAh nonremovable Li-Po battery which easily lasts a day for the average user, augmented by Nokia’s intelligent battery management. It is well suited to handle the huge screen and big camera that Nokia never really go wrong on. It’s also comforting to know that it comes with 18W fast charging which fills it up with juice in a little under 2 hours. There is however no wireless charging on board, which is rather disappointing considering its price range

Software

Out of the box, the Nokia 8.3 5G comes with the best and the latest Android 10 stock-based Android One, something Nokia is well renowned for. Therefore, it feels lighter, faster, and modern, with almost zero bloatware, making up for one of the best experiences on Android. When paired with the SoC, the Nokia 8.3 5G gives off a performance that could easily rival flagships of days gone by.

The Nokia 8.3 5G is truly a very unique device. From having a powerful midrange chip, an impressive camera, and a stock Android UI, this is certainly a very practical device and a beautiful one at that. In addition to NFC, Bluetooth 5, and dual standby nano sim, there is hardly anything to complain about this phone.
