Introduction

Over and above the many powerful phones within the Nokia stable, we finally get a worthy low budget phone, the Nokia 2.3, which seeks to combine the design language of Nokia and entry-level specifications. It, of course, is released to a demographic that just needs a working smartphone, without so much the creature comforts that other specifications offer, so compromises are a very important consideration. Here’s is a look.

Design

Nokia 2.3 has many of the features that have come to influence the design of many of the 2020’s phones across the whole industry. The Nokia 2.3 uses a 6.2-inch HD+ display using an LCD screen. The display comes with a waterdrop notch on the top. The bezels are not that narrow and the chin is even bigger, where the logo is lettered. The phone is a plastic build, both frame, and back. On the back, it has a dual-camera setup but no fingerprint scanner. At the bottom, we expected a micro-USB connector and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Performance

Now, Nokia 2.3 is a basic entry device, so not is expected from it, despite the inviting optics. It runs the entry-level Mediatek A22 MT6761 chipset, a 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 CPU and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It comes with 2 gigs of RAM and 32 gigs of storage, in addition to hybrid expandable micro SD storage that shares the slot with the sim card. The performance is decent and expected. Day to day use isn’t a hassle but anything intensive or running high-end graphics isn’t optimized on this phone.

Camera

Certainly, the Nokia 2.3 isn’t one to impress with the cameras, as it has to keep everything simple. The device comes with a dual-camera setup, with a 13 mp primary camera and a 2 mp depth sensor. The photos are usable but one should expect anything past basic quality from them, especially if the lighting conditions are anything short of optimal – see Nokia 6.2.

It gets worse as low light persists to a point where the photos are pretty unusable. Video is basic, some 1080p at 30fps, but shaky and lacking dynamic range. On the front, we have a basic 5 mp which tries to keep a fight, but past selfies, there isn’t much use for it.

Battery

Nokia 2.3 comes with a 4000 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery, which is a very welcome addition. The battery is big and can comfortably go 2 days on a charge. That leaves a lot of power to use in a single day, so lots of content consumption and mild gaming. We still keep the micro-USB connector so we get 10W standard charging which would fill this unit in about 3.5 hours, which a long time. This unit should optimally be charged overnight.

Nokia 2.3 Software

Nokia is better than Samsung at timely Android updates, study says. The Nokia 2.3 runs the stock Android 9 Pie-based Android One straight out of the box. The software is such a joy to use. No bloatware to keep slowing your phone down, or unnecessary apps running in the background and hogging all the RAM. This UI is stock as it comes, and for a phone with these basic specifications, that means a lot. The UI is fast and fluid, and very intuitive as compared to another custom UIs in this particular price segment – see Nokia 2.2.

Conclusion

The Nokia 2.3 is a practical phone for a practical price. Other than design ergonomics, every other feature should admittedly be considered with a pinch of salt when it comes to performance. It still is a very attractive value proposition at entry-level pricing, especially for the stock android and large battery, and could be an attractive unit at those particular price points.
