HUAWEI Y6P

Huawei Y6p is available in Kenya for 17,500 shillings. It was released in 2020, May 06 alongside the Y5p. Some of its features are a 6.3-inch display, 74 GB internal storage, 3 GB RAM, a 13 MP camera, and a 5000 mAh battery.

Huawei has upped up its entry-level offerings, following through with massive competition that’s widely associated with this particular segment. Within the y series, we get a back-to-back release, the Huawei Y6p, with a decent screen, an average chipset, and a big battery, available from May 2020. So what sets this device apart from other entry-level devices? Here is a look.

Design and display

The new Huawei Y6P expectedly comes with an IPS LCD screen, 6.3 inches in size, with a screen-to-body ratio of about 81.3%. It has an infinity u design that houses the front-facing camera. The screen is nice for media consumption, with the small inconvenience of the small teardrop notch. It has narrow bezels but the chin at the bottom is quite big. It is a plastic build, both frame, and back, with a triple camera layout and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. We have a 3.5mm head jack but still a micro USB connector with OTG.

Performance

The Huawei Y6P comes with the Mediatek MT6762R Helio P22. It is well optimized and great in power management. It runs a 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 CPU alongside a PowerGE 8320 GPU. The SoC is designed to offer entry-level performance but it’s still great for day-to-day use. Onboard is a generous 3/4GB of RAM and 64GB of mass storage, besides a dedicated microSDXC expandable memory card. That should most certainly suffice for most as the memory can be extended by an extra 256G – see Huawei Y5p.

Camera

Despite being an entry, the Huawei Y6P comes with a triple camera setup. It has a 13 mp primary, in addition to 5 mp ultrawide and a 2mp depth sensor. For a budget device, the photos are decent and well detailed, especially in well-lighted environments. It adds some bokeh and portrait modes to the fray, but they should be just about average.

The wide-angle lens is certainly a welcome addition, especially for those landscape photos, though it tends to lose detail in the final image. It can shoot video in 1080p at 30fps. Upfront is a decent 8 mp shooter capable of 1080 video at 30fps – Huawei Y9 Prime 2019.

Battery

The Huawei Y6P comes with a huge 5000mah nonremovable Li-Po battery, certainly massive for such entry-level specifications. It can easily last 2 days of average use so breezing through the day is piecemeal to this device. That means lots of hours on the internet, consuming media content, and a little extra photography without worrying about juice.

However, since it comes with a micro-USB connector, we get standard charging of 10W. it may take a while to charge up, usually overnight, but once you are full, you are good to go.

Software

As many of the devices in the Huawei stable, the software has become a very worrying development over the last few months, and the Huawei Y6P is no different. After being kicked out of Android core GMS, Huawei has been trying to fill in the gap for its users outside china, through HMS and optimizing their software. It comes with EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 straight off the box.

Installing Google apps on Huawei Y6p

Instead of Playstore, you get AppGallery, but without GMS, some Android stock apps like YouTube, Gmail, Docs, and those that need the GMS to operate like the location for Uber, are not compatible. Nonetheless, one can also sideload apps from APK resources available on the internet. The EMUI still works like a charm though, light, fluid and reliable so it’s easy to forget the compromises aboard.

Conclusion

The Huawei Y6P is quite a capable device, considering a decent SoC, a little bit of camera, and a big battery. It is easy to recommend, despite running Huawei Mobile Services. It competes quite favorably and the hardware should mean something to most – product website.
