 Huawei P50 Pro

The Huawei P50 Pro is a refresh to the P series from Huawei flagship devices, which ran into a little trouble when it went it got kicked out of Android. 120Hz super AMOLED screen, a primary 64MP quad-camera set up, 66W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, a huge battery at 4360mAh, and the new flagship Snapdragon 888 4G chipset. Other than lacking 5G, it’s as good a flagship as any other. It ticks pretty much every box, and then some. This phone is certainly a flagship powerhouse.

Design

The Huawei P50 Pro comes with a 6.6-inch 120Hz OLED screen with a center-aligned punch-hole design for the selfie camera. It’s a beauty, with very even bezels and a very narrow chin, with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.2%. It has an aspect ratio of 20:9 and supports HD10+ which makes it an absolute delight to consume media with.

It has an aluminum frame, a glass back and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front panel. It is very bright and vivid, peaking at 1000 nits. It’s rated IP68 for dust and splash protection and is water-resistant in up to 1.5m of water for 30 mins. unfortunately, it loses the headphone jack. It has a fast fingerprint sensor, conveniently placed under the screen. It does support stereo speakers, offering great sound when playing media.

Performance

The Huawei P50 Pro brings in the heat with the latest generation flagship choice of the inhouse Kirin 9000 from Huawei or Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888 4Gchipset, the fastest in the current range of flagship 5G chips, making it very fast and excellent for gaming. It has a Kyro Octa-core CPU paired with an Adreno 642L/Mali G78 GPU, with storage options of 8 or 12 GB for RAM & 256/512 GB for ROM. It however comes with a hybrid expandable memory option, which shares the slot with the sim card.

Paired with the 120Hz AMOLED screen, running the latest EMUI 12 or Harmony OS 2.0 skin on top, depending on location. Despite losing the core services, the performance still feels very fast and premium. Huawei has really tried to bridge the gap after being kicked out of Android but they have made tremendous progress bridging the gap & offering a working alternative. Everything feels fast, fluid, and rich in color.

Cameras

The Huawei P50 Pro has a quad-camera arrangement on the back. It comes with an excellent 50 MP primary sensor, with 12.5MP picture binning for those excellent daylight photos. It has a 13MP ultra-wide with a 123˚ FOV, for great landscape and group photos. There is a 64MP depth periscope lens, giving it great immersion when it comes to those close-up photos, with 3.5X optical zoom and 7X lossless zoom with OIS.

In addition, there is a very interesting Chroma Camera for mono black and white pictures, which is rather unusual. Its main work is to allow more light hence greater sharpness & detail. The video can support up to 4K video at 30/60fps fps, with HDR supports & gyro-EIS stability assistance. It can also record 1080p video at 960 fps. The selfie camera is a generous 13MP wide sensor, capable of 4K at 30fps and 1080p video at 30fps. The selfies and videos are great and well exposed.

Other features

The Huawei P50 Pro has an excellent 66W fast charging, which can charge the phone to 100% in 35 mins. That is in addition to the fact that it also comes with a Li-Po 4360mAh non-removable battery. Even with the 120Hz high refresh rate AMOLED screen, this should be more than a day’s worth. The main concession would be that there is no wireless charging here though it does come with wired reverse charging. It, fortunately, does support NFC for contactless paying.

Similarly, priced phones would include the Apple iPhone 13 Pro, Motorola Edge 30 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22+ 5G, and the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. the main talking points would be screen and fast charging, but considering the phone does not come with native Google Mobile Service, it’s important to consider that some apps might be missing, like Maps, YouTube and Gmail. They can however be side-loaded in a rather straightforward manner so no need for alarm.

For the price, it’s a great device. Superior design, high-end screen, and very fast charging. Some people might feel a little skeptical about Harmony OS, but it’s reassuring that it’s not any different from other Android skins so the experience may not vary much. Golden Black, Cocoa Gold, Pearl White, Charm Pink

Common Q & A

  1. How much is a Huawei P50 Pro in Kenya: the phone is currently retailing at Ksh 89,000
  2. Where can I buy a Huawei P50 Pro in Kenya: you can buy it at phonesstorekenya.com, both online and offline, with optional delivery on request.
  3. Does Huawei P50 Pro support google play services: Since Huawei exited using stock android, they have come a long way to what is now known as Harmony OS, which is basically an Android skin, but without Goggle Mobile Services (GMS) which is the architecture that YouTube, Maps, Gmail & other native google apps work on. Other than that, the experience is pretty much the same as another Android phone
  4. Does Huawei P50 Pro have wireless charging: yes, it does. In fact, it has an industry-leading 50W fast charging, in addition to 66W fast wired charging.
  5. Does Huawei P50 Pro support 5G: No it doesn’t and for a good reason. 5G at this point is still being rolled out in even major markets, so at this point, it’s not of much use. The savings on cost is therefore reflected in the final purchase price
