Prefatory

Just like many years before, Huawei’s yearly launch of its superphones is here with us, the P series. And just like the launches before this, the users get to have a Lite version of the flagships, usually with a few corners cut to achieve a certain price ceiling while delivering the same user experience as the rest of the stable. This year’s candidate, the Huawei P40 Lite, released in March 2020, is no different. An IPS LCD screen, a plastic build, and a midrange chip have always been obvious choices, but we still keep the powerful cameras and insane fast charging. How did they do it? Let’s see.

Design and display

The Huawei P40 Lite comes with a 6.4 inch LTPS IPS LCD screen, unlike its OLED counterparts, with a left-aligned punch-out for the selfie camera, achieving a body to screen ratio of 83.5%. the bezels and chin are almost uniform, giving off a feeling that the phone is bigger than it seems. The frame is plastic, and so is the back, where a quad-camera set up awaits. At the bottom is the speaker grille, a 3.5mm connector, and thankfully, the 3.5mm is back. As an interesting design choice, Huawei decided to go with the side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which from a design perspective makes the back give off a premium feel, a genius move.

Performance and storage

The Huawei P40 Lite comes with the midrange HiSilicon Kirin 810 chip, flanked by the octa-core up to 2.27 GHz Cortex A76/A55 combo and a Mali G52 MP6 GPU. The memory configuration onboard is fixed at 6GB RAM and 128GB UFS3.0 mass storage. It, however, has a hybrid nano memory slot it shares with the sim card which can expand the memory by an extra 256GB. This is top midrange performance but that does not mean it doesn’t measure up. It as much a capable device as any other, handling graphics and RAM intensive tasks with ease while keeping the phone optimized when it comes to overheating and battery life.

Camera

The Huawei P40 Lite comes with a quad-camera set up, starting with a 48mp wide lens, an 8mp ultrawide sensor, a 2mp depth shooter, and a dedicated 2mp macro shutter. The photos are impressive. Clear, sharp, and well detailed, they are easily some of the best within the midrange space. The software behind Night Mode is great, balancing just enough exposure to otherwise low light conditions. The bokeh is good, and so is the image detection in portrait. It can record 4k video at 30fps and 2160p video in 60fps. On the front is a single selfie camera, 16mp capable of decent selfies in optimal lighting and Full HD video at 30fps.

Battery

The Huawei P40 Lite gets to keep the 4200 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery in use by the rest of the variants in the P40 lineup, and that’s great. With an LCD screen and a midrange chip, this battery should easily last more than a day, even for the power user. Despite losing the wireless charging due to its plastic build, it still keeps the very fast 40W fast charging, easily topping up 100% in an hour. This would mean getting as much as 23% in just 10 minutes and just over 50% in 30 minutes. This makes it one of the fastest charging midrange phones in the market.

Software

After being kicked out of the Android core GMS after a US ban on Huawei, the Huawei P40 Lite comes with the Android 10 based MIUI 10. But it’s not your average Android offering. It loses a lot of the system apps and services that rule Android, such as location, used by apps like Uber, and other services that run Docs, YouTube, Gmail among others. Since it also lost the Playstore, Huawei developed AppGallery where many of the major apps are hosted. See also P40 Pro

One can also sideload apps downloaded from APK resources within the internet and they should work just fine. It is updated and security patches that most will lose out on but one can manually update it if necessary. The MIUI is fast and light, and most of the system apps it lost with Android have been replaced in one way or another by Huawei system apps.

Final remarks

The Huawei P40 Lite is a great offering, hot in the heels of its bigger P40 brothers. Despite an LCD screen and a mid-range chip, the Huawei P40 Lite is a massive value king, especially getting to keep the massive camera system. The only elephant in the room is the fact that it is not 100% Android supported and what repercussions that means going forward. But other than that lack of Google issue, it is an easy device to recommend. Visit this product’s official website to learn more
